We had the good fortune of connecting with Kisha Simpson, owner and CEO of Kisha K. Collection haircare line, and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kisha, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
Starting a business can be very challenging. It comes with many obstacles and adversities. You’re not going to be motivated every single day and some days you’ll be ready to give up.

My mother used to always tell me, “Nothing makes a failure but a doer”.

During your most difficult times running a business, you have to remind yourself about WHY you started your business. Stay focused on your REASON for starting your business, because it doesn’t necessarily take motivation to keep going, it takes DISCIPLINE.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business started because I simply could not find an edge control that would lay down my 4c textured hair without it melting in the hot sun or curling back up. After several trials and tribulations, I finally discovered a formula that would work for my hair. My edge control is so amazing and such a game changer, I KNEW I had to share it with other people with my hair type dealing with the same challenge.

My business blew up by word of mouth. I’m still shocked at how quickly my company has grown.

Like any other business, I dealt with many adversities. I lost my mother a few months after starting my business, which caused me to struggle with depression and anxiety. Some days it was hard to keep going, but I never gave up and my business is still doing well.

If you want to start a successful business, be prepared to lose family members and friends. The ones that are supposed to continue the journey with you will be there and God will remove the rest. Don’t even question it. Not everyone is meant to go with you.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite restaurant is Ocean Prime. The oysters are to die for.

The Winspear Opera House is a beautiful venue and a great place to see some amazing shows. I recently went to see A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which was the final ballet for Carolyn Judson, which I enjoyed.

The Modern Art Museum in Fort Worth, Kimball Art Museum and Dallas Museum of Art are also at the top of my list.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to thank my lovely mother for always supporting me in my business ventures and believing in me. I also want to thank my accountability partner, D. Ballard, for having high hopes for me, giving me words of wisdom and encouragement in my times of need. My bestie, K. Newhouse, for going along with and supporting all of my business ideas without judgement, and T. Wiley for inspiring and motivating me during some of my most difficult times.
