Meet Kira Gittens: The Paint Babe

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kira Gittens and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kira, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
3 Babes & A Brush came to me years ago as a way for my sisters and I to take on our Father’s business when he was ready to retire. Unfortunately, things had fallen to the wayside due to major changes in everyone’s lives.
In December, 2018, our Father was fatally shot walking home from the convenience store; a routine that he had for years. Due to his murder, we decided to return to our plans to carry on a family legacy and take all the necessary steps to become successful.
Although we’ve had to turn tragedy into triumph, our efforts have proven to be exactly what we needed for ourselves, our families, and the generations to come. It is an honor and a privilege to even have the wherewithal and strength to not only do what our Father was passionate about, but also make him proud by continuing to work hard.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
3 Babes offers painting, finishing, and cleaning. We are experienced with various residential and commercial properties, and cover everything from aesthetic to type of paint and textures. Color consultations and interior decorating are being added to our list very soon!
I’ve always enjoyed working with my hands, and it was no coincidence that my Dad was a painter/contractor and always seemed to need a “helping hand.” After returning from the military, I was in need of work, and he was in need of help, so I pretty much picked up where I left off with him prior to my military service. This is what birthed the idea of 3 Babes & A Brush initially, and it’s finally come to fruition!
Being a woman in this field is a challenge, but with the shift that is happening all over the world, I am looking forward to seeing more women in this line of work.
A major takeaway I’ve learned from this business choice is, never give your work away. If you feel like you have to lower your prices to get the job, maybe you’re not targeting the right clientele.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Atlanta is a vibe! We have great food and entertainment from almost every walk of life. The Battery is great for food, shopping, and entertainment. Esco Seafood is a great place for some open mic greatness and delicious eats. The Beltline is a nice way to explore, exercise, and hang on out.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to shout out my sisters Randi Dorsey who owns RMashelle Catering and Events and EFF-N ROLLZ, and Rachel J. Dorsey, who is a Mobile Master Cosmetologist, for her personal brand, Hair by Rachel J. They always have my back and never let me stop striving for my very best. I love you, Sissers!!
