We had the good fortune of connecting with KiLowkey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi KiLowkey, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Honestly when I was younger, I was always drawn to music. I watched MTV Jams every morning before school and I used to try and download all the newest music from limewire and burn cds before anyone else had it. Once I realized the possibility of creating music was as simple as getting a laptop and software, I saved up and bought it. Every since then it’s been a daily piece of my life. I think if it’s in you to be a creative you have to really trust that feeling and just continue to work and shape your craft for years. I encourage anyone to follow their creative passions !
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Man, the last 8 years have been an amazing journey of ups and downs. I remember making beats for years and years and having nobody to record on them. At that time I just wanted to produce any records for any artists. The one thing that will set you apart from anyone else in your craft is your work ethic. You may not be in the skill level of the people you look up to yet, but with consistent work on your craft you will ! It’s not a part time thing. You really have to love and dedicate to what you do. It definitely hasn’t been easy to be where I’m at today, but looking back at all the emotions I’ve been through, all the let downs, all the hopes in something that never happened, it’s an amazing and rewarding journey. I don’t really look at events in a short time frame of mind, I’m excited for the next 5-10 years. I know how far I’ve came in 8 years, so I know another 8 will be dramatically different. You have to never stop believing in your vision, and if you really have that feeling you have to stay dedicated no matter what tries to derail you. My current successes and future successes are all produced from relentless dedication of time to my craft and steady networking for years. I’m under current management with Stefan Austin at SJA consultants, major affiliate of neutral records production label. I’ve been working with some extremely talented producers, can’t wait to see what’s next.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Here in Chattanooga, TN there’s some dope things to do. We would have to hit the Tennesse aquarium, walk the bridge downtown, visit Coolidge park and get some ice cream, etc. it’s always dope to just sit around the river and decompress your thoughts. We’d have to go shoot pool or bowl. There’s a dope spot called Southside Social that always has good vibes. And of course we would have to go through my brothers’ WayneOnABeat and Trey Mullins newly built professional recording studio and art center Wavelength Studios !!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My momma !!! My mom has constantly invested in little things for my music time and time again. Her and my step dad bought me a pair of small $100 Alesis speakers to make beats on when I lived with her. And I would be up late making beats in my room and she never complained about the noise once. Every time she calls she’s telling me how she told somebody else about her son being a producer. She keeps me motivated when I need it, and always tells me I’m gonna be where I see myself. Love you mom !
