We had the good fortune of connecting with Kiara Pierre and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kiara, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
On the outside looking in being a nail tech is seen as hobby not as a career. It can be very degrading to have your passion called a hobby when you are making a career out of it. Another thing that many people are unaware about is that fact nail techs of color specifically Black Nail Techs have to work harder to be seen, recognized and given credit for the talent we have. Many deem self taught nail technicians as the lowest level of being a tech. When we provide high quality work, long lasting sets and make sure to take the necessary sanitation steps for every client.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The journey is never easy no matter what you do. I have been doing nails for a little over a year and it has been a roller coaster of a year. I was thrown a lot of curve balls that made me rethink how I should conduct my business. The biggest curve ball is Covid-19. Through all the madness I’ve learned to roll with the punches because if not you’ll fail. My brand means the world to me because it is mine, I have built it to where it is today and will continue to build it. I’ve also started my own online nail supply which is slowly but surely taking off! Doing nails is more than a hobby for me it’s a passion of mine and brings me so much joy creating unique sets for me or my clients.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definitely take my best friend to ponce city market to go to my favorite ramen bar in there and walk the beltline. Id also take them to slutty vegan, to this poetry café called Apache!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wouldn’t be where I am today without my parents they have supported me the entire way and never doubted me. I’d also like to thank my family for allowing me to practice on them even when my work wasn’t the best lol.
