We had the good fortune of connecting with Khaliyma Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Khaliyma, what do you attribute your success to?
My determination to make it. I feel this is the most important because like most people I have been through so much in life. Enough to make most want to quit and give up. I almost did myself. For a long time I felt I didn’t deserve good things or a good life because things never worked out for me. But I never gave up. I stayed focused and determined, even in those low moments in the back of my mind I know I’m destined for greatness. Pushing through my fears and self-doubt is one of the most important factors behind my success.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a singer still trying to find my voice in all honesty. I’m still building my art. I’ve been singing all my life, but due to anxiety I’ve always been afraid to share my gift. My anxiety is what has held me back for majority of my life. I am so proud that I can finally say that I am pushing through my anxieties and fears by performing on stages more, going out and doing more photoshoots. Being able to go out and market myself. This is huge to me because 13 year old Khaliyma would NEVER think we would be out here talking and meeting new people. Getting on stage in front of crowds and being able to be vulnerable and share our voice with others. Really to me artists show vulnerability each time we get on stage. Sharing a piece of ourselves for others entertainment. I know it sounds deep but my all my artists out there know what I mean. There’s so many things I’ve learned. Of course the basics, you can’t trust everyone, keep your circle small with only people you know you can trust, but I also learned that it’s okay to let new people in. For the longest my 6 siblings were my only friends because I didn’t trust the world. However I’m learning there are really good people and experiences out there. I want the world to know that even people that comes off with the most confidence can have social anxiety. And if you are a person that struggles with anxiety & depression like myself there is a whole world out there! Don’t be afraid of life! It’s so beautiful, live it while you can and don’t let your anxiety or any mental struggles you may have hold you back!! If I can do it, you can do it! Trust me.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Honestly truly. The first thing we would do is go to the jeju spa. I loveeee that place. They have so many different saunas. You can get your nails done, a foot massage, a full body massage, whatever lmao. Then we’d go and eat brunch at the hive. I just tried them for the first time recently and it was soooo amazing. Those honey biscuits definitely stole my heart. I loveeeee doing the regular tourist things like going to the zoo, the aquarium, the Coca Cola factory, and even the big ole Ferris wheel it’s so fun lol. And of courseeee they MUST experience the night life! There’s karaoke bars, lounges, clubs. I love small lounges like teranga city or ace lounge for a nice lite vibe for the night, or bigger clubs like revel if I really want to turn up! You meet really great people in the night life honestly it’s the best time to socialize and market yourself to new people, before you get too lit of course lol.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family!! My 6 siblings and my mother are my backbone. I literally would not be here if it wasn’t for them. They keep me strong mentally and they keep me motivated. They each have their own business and working towards something, so even growing up and seeing my mom and older siblings work so hard I feel they set the bar high for me! They make me want to work harder when I feel I can’t do it, they encourage me to walk in my faith and in my light. They helped me find my confidence. To sum it up my family is my everything and the reason I wake up and work hard everyday!
