We had the good fortune of connecting with Khalara Spencer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Khalara, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I have always wanted to be an entrepreneur growing up, but I could never decide on what idea I wanted to run with. During my time in the military, I experienced a lot of traumatic events that has greatly shaped who I am today. I went through a lot and I didn’t have the support I wanted. I went to a very, very dark place and it took all the strength in me to come out of it. I mean, I tapped into strength I didn’t even know I had. I am still learning, growing and healing as a spiritual being. Now I am in a heart space where I want help people and give back. I want to create a space where people do not have to hide who they are or what they are going through on their journey. I want to share with people the tools that I used to to heal and create a community where we all strive to learn, teach, heal and grow. Oh yea! And relax!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart from others is my own, unique, personal experience and my resilience. If I would have quit the first time I failed at something, I definitely wouldn’t be here now. My biggest challenge was fear and doubt. It really held me back but it was a lesson I had to learn. I have started so many projects that have failed before getting off the ground because I was scared. It took time to really learn how to put myself out there. I have learned that you have to be so confident in yourself and your work/art that it doesn’t matter who likes it. As long as you like it, thats all that matters. Regardless of what you do, somebody is always going to have something to say. So just do it! I have learned the people closest to you will become jealous and won’t support you but you cannot let that stop you. Being secure in who you are is a must. Know that somebody out there needs your service or product and sometimes it may not be the people you want to reach. I am extremely excited about connecting with others and learning. I know at times I can be a recluse but you never know what somebody can teach you and you never know what somebody needs to learn from you. I am excited about my journey, I am forever evolving and I’m looking forward to how my business/art form will change over the years. I am a dedicated individual and when I truly want something, there isn’t anything anybody can do or say to stop me. Which is good because I am dedicated to the betterment of society, starting with myself. I want the world to know that this is what I have been called to do. This is my purpose and I won’t stop until I am in the sky and I will still keep going. I want to invest in life, just as life has invested in me.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Literally, I am waiting for my best friend to come and see me right now. I live in San Diego and it is beautiful, the weather is magnificent. It is so hard to leave! There’s like so many things to do. I don’t know where to start. I guess after touchdown, we could drive around downtown for the scenery. Oh! We would definitely eat at Tacos El Gordos! The have the best tacos, the taste is so authentic and the line is always wrapped around, so you know it’s good. Going on a hike is a must! Cowles Mountain to be exact. The view is one of a kind, especially when there are clear skies. A visit to the beach would be a play, my favorite is Pacific Beach. It has a cool little vibe and the sunset is amazing. We would slide to the rose garden at Balboa park if it’s in season. I would suggest brunch at Fig Tree Cafe or Agave Cafe . Agave cafe is so underrated in my opinion. It so good and the customer service is on point. Since Los Angeles is only 2 hours away, checking out the Santa Monica Pier, Venice Beach and Hollywood Blvd. is a must. I mean there are so many weird things going on up there, you would never get bored. People have they own vibe there and it is very different from San Diego and especially Atlanta! How could I could i forget about Roscoe’s House of chicken and Waffles. My best friend and I are pretty chill so nightlife would be in North Park. North Park is a laid back area. They have good food and some cool bars with good music. I like U41. Bluefoot is a little R&B spot, which is cool. Oh and if we want to cop some drip, then Fashion Valley mall is cool. TrueFood Kitchen is my spot. They have good food on the healthier side. The best burritos, probably anything with “tos” at the end. I like Humbertos. I would also give them a tour of the military base on Coronado Island and let them see some helicopters or something like that. There’s plenty to do here and I’m still exploring myself.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost, all thanks to Most High! Shoutout to the Navy for teaching me those hard lessons and the people I served with. My dearest friends, Renny and Chase, they show up without question. Shoutout to my spiritual confidant, Darius, forever spitting that knowledge to me. Shoutout to Deonte and Nabihah for pulling me off the ledge!! They were my bones and muscles when I had nothing. Shoutout to Stephanie, she came through when I had nowhere to live and she can cook her butt off!! Shoutout to Justin for pushing me to take that leap of faith. Lastly, a special thanks to my soul tribe, we are forever expanding.
