We had the good fortune of connecting with Kevin Ruth and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kevin, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
A lot of people don’t know that we at P&S only works on Airstreams. They are all surprised that we are able to employ as many people as we do and keep them all busy day in and day out, just to work on Airstreams.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others: We’ve been around longer than anyone else in the industry. I think a lot of it is because for 45 years all we did was restore Airstreams and that’s what we were, and still are known for. Within the last 10 years, we added food trucks and conversions as a service we provide whereas all of our competitors started all at the same time by building food trucks and overtime have had to learn how to restore and repair.
What you are most proud of or excited about: We are now an authorized Airstream “Upfitter” which means we can get a brand new Airstream from the factory, as a shell, with no interior, and convert it into the customers dream.
How did you get to where you are today business-wise: A lot of hard work and taking A LOT of risks.
Was it easy? Nope. How did you overcome the challenges? Kept working hard and battled through it.
What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way: Go with your gut, even when you think it’s crazy.
What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story? That we’re a one stop shop with a lot of Airstream knowledge.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to Cedar Point, the Airstream Factory, Put-in-Bay, a Toledo Mudhens game, a Cleveland Browns game, and more!
I’d take them to grab a donut at our local bakery, The Ideal Bakery, and then take them to dinner at some of our local restaurants like Scarpettas Italian, The Garrison, PeKing, and Casa Fiesta.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My dad, Steve. If it weren’t for him and my grandpa, none of this would be possible. He’s taught me everything I need to know about Airstreams and how to successfully run P&S. Even if Airstreams weren’t around, he would have taught me how to be successful in anything. Give him anything, and he won’t stop until he’s achieved the goal. He’s a Jack of all trades!
