We had the good fortune of connecting with Kevin Kurz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kevin, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Brands can succeed or fail for any number of reasons, but every business or endeavor will succeed for the very simple reason that somebody took that first step, that first leap. If you don’t simply take the risk and try, then you will never succeed. I’ve had projects that have worked very well, and some that have flat out bombed… but even the ones that fail provide valuable learning experience for future endeavors. And taking the risk of starting out doesn’t have to be a massive undertaking, either. My first con I had prints of five paintings and made maybe a few hundred dollars over a three day weekend… but it was a spark, and it was enough to make me say “yeah, this is possible. I should pursue this.” You don’t have to start big, but you have to start…

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
So I’m an oil painter by night, specializing in fine art landscapes, usually with a pop culture twist. I actually started out with a series called Happy Little Tardis, which were Bob Ross inspired landscapes with a Doctor Who twist… and things grew from there. Now I have hundreds of nerdy landscapes (along with more traditional ones as well), and I have a blast visiting conventions and shows all across the southeast.

Becoming good at anything requires a lot of practice and a lot of education (not that you need a degree or anything, but even YouTube or other online lessons are extremely important to helping you grow and learn, regardless of your skill level). It’s not that easy and it can be hard work, but if you enjoy it, the it can be amazing! And just keep in mind… you don’t have to be the best in your field; I’ll never be the best painter out there, but if hanging my paintings on a wall can make some people happy, if a print of mine or an instagram post can inspire some others (and if I can make a few bucks along the way), then I consider that a success.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If there’s an Atlanta United game that weekend, we’d definitely be going there, hopefully with a stop at Der Biergarten beforehand for some amazing German food and beers.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Brittany Lunsford-Kurz, my partner, has always been the one to help me push ahead in my artistic endeavors, challenging me and helping me move forward. She’s a fine art photographer and photo retoucher, and I could not have come anywhere close to the success that I have without her help and support.
