We had the good fortune of connecting with Kevin Griggs and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kevin, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
We had been working under Steve Hogben Photography for over a decade and needed to step out from his shadow. Most photographer’s name their business after themselves. We wanted to be a brand not a person, so we founded Capitol Photography Partners.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My company provides visual media services for commercial real estate brokers. Assignments could vary from a vacant lot in Charleston, warehouses in Kansas, apartments in Mobile, or Ritz Carlton in Hawaii. Our clients are demanding, don’t want to hear about problems, and want their photos yesterday. We have to be able to drop everything to jump on a plane at any moment. Being a team allows us to spread out and accommodate multiple clients simultaneously. The easy part is the photography. Coordinating travel and logistics around weather and demanding deadlines is the hard part. Nothing can replace experience when problems arise, but staying calm, being polite, and not allowing emotions to cloud judgement will always be the best course of action in any crisis.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Brick Store Three Taverns Imaginarium
Tap Room Coffee

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mentor Steve Hogben was the photographer that made all the other photographers in my orbit become obsolete. His name has been in the commercial real estate circle for decades and has been vital to our success. His studio had a gravity that seemed to pull in clients like a tractor beam. Capitol’s goal was to be bigger, stronger, and have even more gravity. We still collaborate regularly to keep both Steve’s and Capitol’s clients demanding assignment schedules on track.
