We had the good fortune of connecting with Kevin Darcy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kevin, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I categorize risk in 2 different ways. Productive risk and detrimental risk. Risk has played a tremendous role in my life since I was a kid. I was always into extreme sports and am an absolute adrenaline junky. Later in life this turned out to be a blessing and a curse. Like a lot of people, I went through a period in life of doing dumb shit to chase that high which didn’t always turn out in my favor. After hitting low after low after low I decided it was time to make a change. I started channeling my risk towards more productive things and found it still yielded that same adrenaline inducing feeling. I shot my shot with my wife 8 years ago during a Bears game at Midway in Austin, TX, we picked up and moved to Flagstaff, AZ with no wherewithal, we had no construction experience and built a tiny home in a school bus that took us all over the country, we bought our first home and created a real estate business together with virtually no money to our names and made it work, we’re in the process of opening up our first hot yoga studio, I taught myself how to daytrade and take a risk at 5 a.m. just about every day! The point of all of this is not to brag about what we’ve done. The point is to highlight that without taking these leaps of faith and risking our asses NONE of this would have happened. Risk is imperative to growth and momentum, it’s all about choosing which risk you want to associate with, productive or detrimental.

What should our readers know about your business?
My wife and I run a real estate team in Bend, Oregon at Engel & Völkers & are in the midst of opening up our towns first hot power yoga studio in Redmond, Oregon. I truly believe that what sets us a part is that we meet people where they are & are actually authentic about it. It completely boggles my mind how prevalent the disregard for the human experience has become as of recent. We aim to not only assist people in the largest purchase of their life but to leave a lasting impression that turns clients into friends. This world needs more love & we’re doing our best daily to assist in that. Right off the bat this sounds like some entitled BS that only privileged people get to say, but I truly believe it. I was raised by a single mother that struggled to put food on the table. At times she couldn’t pay the rent, didn’t have a car, etc.. So we would have to walk to the grocery store, doctor appointments, & whatever else. I was homeless at one point in life & have spent the better part of my life clawing my way to where I’m at now. I think one of the biggest lessons I learned in life is that you see who your true friends are when you have nothing. Everyone wants to be your friend and cozy up when you have money or excitement around but as soon as you start telling people no, you see their true colors.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
It depends on the time of year! One of the great things about living in Central Oregon is we get all the seasons. In the summer you’re out floating the river, hiking, mountain biking, and hitting all of the incredible breweries that the area has to offer (and there are a lot of them.) In the winter we’re up at either Mt. Bachelor or Hoodoo to go snowboarding & still indulging in the breweries because hey, you gotta stay warm up there! Our two favorite spots to eat at no matter what time of the year are Sen and Monkless. Sen is a really tasty contemporary Thai noodle shop and Monkless pumps out amazing Belgian Ales along with a killer food menu.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Gotta give it up to my mom & late grandparents!!! She raised me as a single mother in Chicago, IL and always instilled in me to never be a victim of your circumstance. She has always been an entrepreneur and taught me that is the way to true freedom in America. My grandparents were there when mom was out hustling and gave me such a tremendous amount of love. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the mark they made in my life.
Gotta also give love to my wife who is not only my twin flame but my business partner. We came from living in a garage to building an empire together. I love you.

Big shoutout to the ones I consider family at my real estate brokerage Engel and Völkers in Bend, Oregon. You know who you are!
Last but not least, everyone that has come into my life. Whether the experience was positive or negative, you were a part of the journey & in some way & assisted me to getting here. Thank you.
