We had the good fortune of connecting with Keshia Dennis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Keshia, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I struggled with anxiety as a teenager and could sometimes barely get through days; so I wanted to do something that would impact others that are struggling with mental health. I wanted to create a platform and environment that would encourage others to speak up about Mental Health not help erase the stigma. Starting my nonprofit is one of the best decisions that I have ever made. over the years, I have been able to help so many people who were afraid to deal with trauma, anxiety, and depression.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The Elephant in the Room, Inc.® is one of my most proudest creations. I am most proud of knowing that my mental health nonprofit has helped save lives. The Elephant in the Room, Inc. has given athletes, entertainers, students, and adults of all different backgrounds an opportunity to talk about mental health comfortably. We couldn’t have gotten where we are today without the support of others. We have met and partnered with so many companies and individuals that share the same passion that we have about mental health. Being able to build relationships through The Elephant in the Room, Inc. has been most rewarding. Was it easy? That’s a good question. I can’t really say that it was easy or that it was not easy. What I can say is that with time, hard work, and believing in yourself and the goal that you have in mind to impact others, the right people and ideas come to you. I would like the world to know that mental health should be normalized and with the work that we’re doing here at The Elephant in the Room, Inc., our hopes are that we are going to soon be able to talk about mental health the same way that we speak of our primary physician, dentist, hair stylist, jeweler, etc.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love good food! I also love the little gems of Atlanta. I would take my friend to the Beltline Atlanta for a nice walk and of course we would follow up with an Acai bowl from Playa Bowls. I’d also take them to view the skyline at 9 mile and have a lovely dinner followed by a few games! I’m super competitive so I’m not taking it easy on them!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to shoutout my friends who are family for encouraging me, supporting me, pushing me, and caring about the importance of mental health.
