We had the good fortune of connecting with Kerri Parker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kerri, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I love everything creative. I got to a point in my life where I couldn’t blame anyone for me not pursuing my dreams. Who was going to stop me? Weirdos.n.Unicorns was created for several reasons. The name is a reflection of my personality. I’m so socially awkward that sometimes I feel out of place. Its not a bad feeling. I just realized that authenticity is rare, and most people just try to fit in instead of being their authentic self. The brand was also created because I was tired of seeing everyone look the same. I have to laugh at myself when I say that. There was no originality. The concept of Weirdos.n.Unicorns is just shirts and hoodies. I didnt want to create “outfits”. I’d rather my customers create their own look. Rock your favorite hat and sneakers or blazer and heels with my shirts. Dress it up with your own unique style. Weirdos.n.Unicorns is all about authenticity and also self love. Most people consider being weird a bad thing, but weird is simply the difference from what a person perceives to be normal and acceptable. Weird is good and creates diversity amongst any group. Who wants to be just like everybody else? You come as you are. I’m going to love you regardless.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Although I have successfully pursued degrees and certifications, my heart belongs to all things independent and creative. Lessons I’ve learned along the way would be that everyone isn’t going to like you. Self love is the best love even while in love. If you love it, do it. I want the world to accept that no one is perfect. We all have flaws, but our flaws are what make us authentic and beautiful. Embrace it and love yourself and others without conditions.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My best friend would find this question hilarious because I haven’t really experienced many hot spots in Atlanta. Im almost ashamed to say, but I rely on a couple of my friends to tell me where to take my besties when they visit. We like to cook for each other and just vibe out at home. Usually when they visit me, they know its relaxation time. However, I am a big foodie so exploring new places to eat is always exciting for me.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There were several people who contributed to my creative journey. I wasn’t raised around entrepreneurs. I was raised by an Educator who taught us to go to college, get a good job and retire. Deep down I’ve always wanted to make aiving expressing myself creatively. My first experience with entrepreneurship was watching my extended family in Dallas, TX run their salon, Salon 8876. They contributed to my creative expression and allowed me to be me. They believed in me when I needed it the most, and were my biggest supporters when I decided to quit my job and move to Atlanta to pursue my dream. When I began to create Weirdos.n.Unicorns, I met my business coach at The Glam University. She taught me alot about setting up and running a business. I’m grateful for them all. They definitely added value to my journey.
