We had the good fortune of connecting with Kendrick Amadeus and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kendrick, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
“Balance is not something you find, its something you create”- Jana Kingsford

First starting off as a designer I thought i had to keep my head down and work as much as i could, as hard as i could, for as long as i could because i thought that’s how you made it. Soon id find myself burnt out and taking a long hiatus in between projects and that would be on repeat for three years. Through that seemingly never ending cycle i found myself feeling discouraged because i felt like i was missing out on moments with friends and family and i still wasn’t where i wanted to be in life. Thats where the idea of balance kicked in for me. I realized taking hours or even days off wasn’t going to stop my forward moving momentum with my work but actually enhance it. In fact, continuing to work until i burned out was stoping my momentum because i would work and then not do anything for months until i felt like working again. Now, years later, i follow the simple rule of “Just live”. With this, if i have an opportunity to go out and do things with friends or family, then id go do it without feeling guilty that I’m not working. Ive actually found this to be very beneficial not only to myself but to my work as well. Balance for me is now essential, too much or too little of something is bad for you.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am Kendrick Amadeus. My work is literally a piece of me. Everything i make exudes a braggadocios and eccentric energy. Just being who i am and living where i do sets me apart from others, naturally I work to push the norm or create pieces that aren’t seen already in streetwear and being from Atlanta just offers that different type of swag and energy. So far I’ve been in my craft for 4 years and the piece I’m most proud of would be my Vintage Tees. Those are so hard to me, they’re one of a kind and i think that’s what’s going to really push them when I continue to drop them. Ive already had people from all corners of the world order some so its going to be a dream when my clothes fully cover the world. Its definitely going to get to that point soon, i have just have to keep working smart and perceiver through all the obstacles that come my way. Being a small brand ran by one mind is hard all in itself but you learn a lot. In the year and a half of running my business I’ve learned dedication, communication skills, organization, leadership, determination, peace, balance and a lot of other skills i believe will help to succeed in life. When its all said and done, i really want everyone that sees me to know that i, against all odds, really built something from nothing and turned it into a lifestyle. I want everyone to know that they can do it too, its only a matter of if they believe in themselves.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If i had a friend coming to visit we would go to all the crazy places. Nitrozone, Andrettis, Indoor Skydiving and more adult indoor parks. Im glad there are places like that around Atlanta because they let adults have fun and enjoy themselves. If they wanted a great meal, id go to Cajun Bones, American Deli, BGR Grill, Jinya ramen or some Korean Bbq places because those are definitely fire and if we had to just chill out then of course Piedmont would be the moves.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Recognition is very important. I gladly want to shoutout my close friends and family for believing in my vision and supporting me from the start. My football coaches through life for playing a big part in me becoming the person i am and every person I’ve ever come in contact with because i truly believe every conversation I’ve had, has had a huge impact on my direction. I would really like to shoutout my newborn baby boy, Ezra, he’s only a few weeks at the time I’m writing this but he has had a tremendous impact on my life. At the time of conception everything i did and will do will be for him.
