Meet Kendra Thomas | Curly Hair Specialist & Owner of K. Renee Hair Studios

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kendra Thomas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kendra, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
For me, consistency, communication, and managing expectations have been the key habits that shaped my success.
Consistency is crucial, both in building my business and working behind the chair. Just as I strive for consistency in the work I create with each client, I apply the same focus to my day-to-day business tasks. This includes staying in regular communication with my clients, showing up professionally and authentically, and maintaining an environment that promotes peace, positivity, and unapologetic self-expression.
Transparent communication is also one of my core values. Whether it’s sending appointment reminders, having in-depth client consultations, or simply sending a text if I’m running ahead or behind schedule, communication builds trust and keeps everyone on the same page. It minimizes conflict and unfulfilled expectations, and allows both me and my clients to approach every appointment with confidence. I also believe in being upfront about important business updates, like pricing or service changes, well in advance.
Lastly, managing expectations is absolutely key for building long-lasting relationships with clients. Sometimes people may come in with unrealistic expectations when considering their hair’s history, current condition, or maintenance requirements, and I believe in being honest about what’s achievable—whether today, in six months, or a year from now. Education plays a big role here. I don’t just ‘do’ my job; I constantly educate my guests on their hair and give them tips and techniques to help achieve their goals. This focus on education has been a huge contributor to my success.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is about more than just hair—it’s about empowering people to embrace their natural beauty, especially those with curly hair who may have felt unseen or misunderstood. What sets K. Renee Hair Studios apart is our mission to create a space where every client feels heard, valued, and educated on how to care for their unique curls. Curly hair isn’t just a texture; it’s a part of your identity, and I’m passionate about helping people love every bit of themselves, from root to tip.
One of the things I’m most proud of is being able to create a salon environment that not only offers exceptional service but fosters a sense of community and self-expression. When a client leaves my chair, I want them to feel more confident, informed, and in love with their natural hair than ever before. That transformation is what excites me the most—it’s not just about how you look, but how you feel.
Getting to where I am today professionally has been far from easy. My journey began with working long hours at a high-end curly hair salon in Atlanta, where I was often exhausted and overworked. It was a tough learning curve, but it showed me what I didn’t want for myself, which ultimately led me to start my own business. In the beginning, I had to juggle working two jobs just to make ends meet, and I often felt overwhelmed. But through consistency, communication, and setting clear boundaries, I gradually built a client base that allowed me to step out on my own full-time.
The lessons I’ve learned along the way are invaluable. Patience has been one of the biggest—success doesn’t happen overnight, and comparison is the thief of joy. I’ve learned to stay focused on my own path and trust the process, knowing that my hard work will pay off in time. Another lesson is the importance of surrounding yourself with the right people. My support system, especially my father, friends, and partner, Sharod, have been my pillars of strength, guiding me and encouraging me to take risks and pursue my dreams.
What I want the world to know about K. Renee Hair Studios is that we’re here to make people feel seen and celebrated for who they truly are. I’ve built my brand on the foundation of authenticity, self-love, and education. Every curl, coil, and wave has a story, and I’m here to help tell it. I want my clients to leave my studio feeling empowered, beautiful, and equipped with the knowledge to care for their curls with confidence.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting Atlanta, I’d make sure they got to experience the best mix of city vibes, nature, and amazing food! Atlanta has it all, from vibrant neighborhoods to breathtaking natural escapes, so here’s what our week might look like:
Day 1: We’d kick things off with a city adventure on the East Atlanta Beltline. The Beltline is a 22-mile trail that winds through Atlanta’s coolest neighborhoods, connecting incredible parks, art installations, and local attractions. We’d rent bikes or scooters and explore Piedmont Park, stop by Ponce City Market and Krog Street Market to enjoy a mix of shops, bites, and art. Street performers are a staple here too, so we’d definitely take some time to soak in the energy!
Day 2: For a slower pace, we’d head out to the Chattahoochee River. There are some beautiful, easy trails along the river, perfect for picnicking or just enjoying the view. And if we’re up for something more active, we might even go tubing or kayaking.
Days 3-4: Mid-week calls for a bit more adventure! We’d drive out to Cloudland Canyon State Park or Tallulah Gorge. These spots have some of the most stunning views in Georgia and some great hiking trails for those ready to take on a challenge. The waterfalls and canyon views would be worth every step.
Days 5-6: Back in the city, it’s time for some foodie exploration! We’d spend a day at Ponce City Market sampling a little bit of everything, from international flavors to Atlanta favorites. Then, I’d take them to a local favorite spot like Mary Mac’s Tea Room for a taste of authentic Southern cooking. And we can’t miss dinner at a rooftop restaurant like 9 Mile Station, where we’d get some of the best city views.
Day 7: To wrap up the trip, we’d have a laid-back day exploring more of Atlanta’s art and history. We’d visit the High Museum of Art, stroll through Little Five Points for its eclectic shops and murals, and maybe even end with a live show or jazz night at a local spot.
With the perfect mix of city, nature, and food, this itinerary would show off everything I love about Atlanta, making it a memorable trip for sure!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Above all, I’d like to give a special shoutout to my small circle of friends who have been by my side, encouraging and supporting me 1000% every step of the way. Friends are like chosen family, and I’m beyond grateful for the strong men and women who uplift me daily.
I also want to give a big shoutout to my father, who has always been my biggest cheerleader. Through every decision I’ve made, he’s stood by me, pouring into me and believing in me, even when I struggled to believe in myself. His guidance and support have been invaluable, and I’m forever thankful for the wisdom he’s shared and the role he’s played in my journey.
Lastly, a very special shoutout to my partner, Sharod. Not only has Sharod been a huge supporter of my business, but he’s been there for me mentally, emotionally, and physically, always lightening my load in any way he can—despite his own commitments. He was the one who convinced me to take the leap and start my own business, and he continues to encourage both growth and balance in my business and personal life. K. Renee Hair Studios wouldn’t be where it is today without the incredible support of the people around me, and I’m truly lucky to have them in my life.
