We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelly Johns and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kelly, what do you want people to remember about you?
I want people to remember me for making them smile and laugh in addition to making them feel inspired to make a positive difference and to be confident in who they are. I am fans of my favorite actors and entertainers because of their immense talent on camera, but also because of the lives they lead off camera. I am passionate not only about entertaining people, but also about using my platform to advocate for social and political change. I also want people to know that I, and we all, should always be learning and evolving in not only our careers, but also in our daily lives to become more kind, compassionate, and informed. Lastly, I love seeing entertainers/influencers sharing their authentic selves and embracing their “imperfections” to help others feel more confident, so I try to do the same. For example, I share things on my Instagram story that despite being very petite, I still have stretch marks and cellulite, which is totally normal, and that I also struggle with adult acne. Overall, I hope people remember me as someone who brought light and laughter into their day and encouraged them to live a happier, more confident, and compassionate life.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have been so extremely fortunate to have worked with actors such as Lily Collins in “The Blind Side” and my lifetime role-model, Rachel McAdams, in “Game Night.” Meeting and filming a scene with Rachel was definitely one of my absolute proudest and most exciting moments of my life. I have been in the film/TV industry for over 12 years, but despite some incredible highlights in my career, it is never easy being an actor. It is extremely competitive and can be very discouraging as everything is unpredictable. You may book a big project one month but then go six months with minimal auditions/callbacks. Or, you may get to the final round of a callback and get amazing feedback from the casting director, but then you don’t hear back again. Something a lot of people don’t know is that sometimes, even for just a one-line role, there may be more than 100 people auditioning. I really have had to toughen up and just do my best, hope for the best, but expect nothing. If you get upset about every “no” that you get, you won’t survive in this industry. The bright side is that you can always create your own work, which is why I started making my own Bachelor parody recaps on social media. It takes me many hours every week to film and edit, but I am able to continue improving my craft and entertaining people on a weekly basis, as well as connect with awesome people from around the world! The Bachelor has been my favorite show since its inception almost 20 years ago, so it has been a blast making parodies of each episode and even connecting with people from the show!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In a non-COVID world, I would definitely take them to my favorite restaurant, Little Bangkok, for the BEST Thai food! Exploring the Belt Line and Piedmont Park is a must, as well as going on a hike on one of the many trails/mountains in the Atlanta area. Since I am a theater lover, we’d have to hit up a show at the FOX Theater, and then visit the Ponce City Market Skyline Park afterwards! Depending on the season, attending a football or soccer game at Mercedes Benz Stadium or a baseball game at SunTrust Park is always a blast! And another place I have been wanting to visit is the National Center for Civil and Human Rights!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many pivotal people to thank! Firstly, I never would have gotten into acting if it weren’t for my mother. She saw the talent in me from an early age and signed me up for an acting class, encouraged me to audition for my first play in middle school, and then secured an agent for me when I was 15. I have been with my wonderful agent, Barbara Garvey (East Coast Talent) ever since, and I am so grateful to her for helping me book many roles as well as her constant hard work and confidence in me. I am also so appreciative of my manager, Sean Pharms (Stellar Artists Management) as well as Amanda Abelita (Abelita PR.) Of course I’d like to thank my amazing husband, Bryan, for his unconditional support and encouragement. In addition, I’d like to thank every single person, whether it’s a family member, friend, or an online fan who has shared my videos, left a nice comment, and supported me through my acting career and as I make my silly parody videos! And lastly, I thank God for blessing me with so many incredible opportunities and wonderful people throughout this journey!
