We had the good fortune of connecting with Keeyen Martin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Keeyen, why did you pursue a creative career?
I chose to pursue an artistic and creative career because my upbringing was surrounded by music. I knew at a very young age that music was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. My parents and immediate family have deep roots in music and the arts.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a pianist, singer and songwriter with a love for music. I coin my sound as “Pop/Soul/Feel Good” and that’s primarily because I think that’s what I feel when I’m creating. My sound and music is very authentic and unique. I aim to write and perform songs that are form my direct experience. I’m most excited about the impact my songs are making! From steady streams and avid fans and listeners, its truly a blessing to have people listening. My journey to the professional world of music started in my hometown, Charlotte, NC. There I cultivated my craft from singing in church to all types of talent shows and school productions. That set the tone for me. After finishing high school I transitioned to college at Morehouse College, where I studied as a Music Major. Being planted in Atlanta, this set me up for much success. It was a very clear connection to the professional Music Industry and I’ve been moving steadily ever since. It certainly wasn’t easy, but the challenges made me better. I learned to remain consistent and student of the industry. I want the world to know that If you can be consistent you can be great! Thats absolutely what I chose to be.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was visiting me here in Atlanta I would start by taking them to the Beltline. The belt line is filled with scenery and activity. From people walking, musicians performing, to boutique and “mom/pop” style stores, there’s so much to enjoy. We would eat at some of my favorites spots: Xtreme Teriyaki, lil Rey, Hudson Grille, and Mary Macs. Each day we’d visit a museum or historic site as there are plenty to enjoy within the city. Hanging at Battery Park would be a highlight. Everything from good food to Live music is there. An area known as “Lil 5 Pts” would also be a preferred place to hangout and experience Atlantas culture.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would say my Mentor Dennis Reed jr. and his organization Inspire The Fire. Im forever indebted to this nonprofit performing arts organization that has changed my life!
