We had the good fortune of connecting with Keem Settles and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Keem, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I’ve always been fascinated by the process of making art. How do you get from point A to point Z? What was it about point K that frustrated you? Did you try something new this time or did you go for what you know works? Seeing those first few scribbles on paper become a full portrait, or those bare vocals form into a complete song is so gratifying!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve always been a huge music fan but I never actually attempted to make my own until I was almost 20. I knew from a young age that I wanted to do art of some sort which is what eventually attracted me to graphic design. So the idea of being a creative has definitely always appealed to me! At some point, doing music just made sense. The part of art that always fascinated me the most was watching it go from literally nothing, just a thought in your mind, to something tangible. Something that could be seen and felt. Creating music gives me that feeling 10 times over!
A story I’m always sure to tell is how my late best friend Pariss got me into music before he passed away. I truly feel that if it wasn’t for him I never would’ve even considered doing it on my own. Continuing in his absence has definitely been the biggest challenge I’ve faced so far! Honoring what we started is absolutely one of my biggest motivations. I feel like I owe it not only to him, but to myself to see how far I can take this!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would honestly take them various places! This is a small area but it’s in the vicinity of so much beautiful scenery! There are tons of national parks around if they wanted that experience. Or if they wanted a more social experience, I’d take them downtown Augusta. I’d also pitch downtown Greenville if they were down to sit in the car for that hour and a half trip! Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I honestly want to shoutout anyone who ever took even a second to encourage me or listen to my music. The people that continued to believe in me even when I didn’t quite believe in me! I’ve been blessed enough to have an amazing group of creative friends that have kept me inspired at every turn!
