We had the good fortune of connecting with Kayla Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kayla, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I believe when it comes to achieving your dreams, it is 100% necessary to take risks. One quote that resonates with me is “Before something great is achieved, your comfort zone must be disturbed.” I’ve learned that to accomplish my goals, I must step out of my comfort zone and take risks. I can’t be afraid of failure, but accept and learn from it. If something doesn’t go as expected, I use that as motivation to keep going. Taking risks has led to positive results in my life/career that I would have never imagined.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I write songs across so many different genres but the main one is Electropop. I just released my debut single “Indifferent” which took a lot of preparation and planning. Usually, when I write a song, I write that same song in multiple different ways until I find the perfect version that demonstrates the feeling I am aiming to convey. As far as my sound goes, I love anything with a mysterious vibe to it. I like to start with a foundation, whether that is a beat, or a verse and then build on top of that, mixing together different genres to make it unique. So far starting with the release of my first song it has been a smooth process but I am certain that on this journey there will be ups and downs and obstacles, but by staying focused on the end goal and blocking out any negative energy, I am sure I will overcome them effectively. I want my audience to know that I will always give out positive energy and uplift others. I hope they will be able to connect with my music sonically and lyrically, because when I write, I bring my deepest emotions to the songs. I want my listeners to relate to my songs and know they are not alone.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
That’s a great question because there is so much to do here in Atlanta! As far as restaurants, I would say Pretty Little Taco in Union Square, or Osha Thai which has amazing sushi. I would also go to Ponce City Market for the food, drinks, stores and the overall vibe. Also, less than 20 minutes walking from my school is Piedmont Park, which is nice to go to when you want to walk around and enjoy nature; especially on Sundays when they have various food trucks and music.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are so many people I feel deserve recognition for helping me get to where I am right now. With the release of my debut single, “Indifferent,” I felt the support from everyone around me. There are many people I need to dedicate my shoutout to for their mentorship and support. First, I would like to give a huge shoutout to my parents. Witnessing all of their hard work and sacrifices, plus realizing the valuable lessons they’ve taught me, has made me who I am today. They push me to be the best version of myself and are always there for me. My younger siblings show me love and support every day which keeps me highly motivated. I have also been blessed with great friendships with my Spelman sisters and Morehouse brothers, who have been very supportive of me and my dreams from the beginning. Last but not least, I wouldn’t be where I am today without the talented people I have worked with in this industry. The release of my new single was made possible by my producers @300it and @electralovelle. They deserve so much credit for helping me truly bring my song to life.
