Meet Kayla Williams | Baker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kayla Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kayla, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My business is dedicated to my bestfriend, Whom I lost the beginning of last year. The JIC is his initials (Jean Ishmael Charles). My bestfriend was a great track runner, so most of the business profits go towards his track fund scholarship. I chose his name for my business because all my life I have been knowing how to bake, so I thought why not put my business in honor of him which will always make me go harder and progress even more with my business.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Everybody has a baking business or a treats business, but it is all about how you set yourself apart from others or what you may do differently. We can all sell the same treats but of course the taste and texture would be different. With my business, yes I do sell the basic items and flavors as in cupcakes in the flavor of vanilla, chocolate or strawberry, but I also switch my flavors up and have more delicious items. My number 1 top flavor is strawberry shortcake, I use strawberry shortcake on cupcakes and also when I make chocolate covered strawberries. I also sell candy grapes, everybody sells candy grapes but the taste and texture is different. I have tried some that was maybe sticky or very sour and the texture just wasn’t there, but with the candy grapes I have, they give you a fruity juicy taste with different flavors while also rolled in crushed candy to make the taste pop. I also have these delicious strawberry cookies that I make that is also on my top list of selling items. I also like to try different flavors and items because I feel thats how I get more customers with having new ideas and flavors from everybody else. I got to where I am today with having the help from others by getting tips and advice and also taking short classes to help me along the way.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting for a week, our itinerary would consist of eating places and fun activities. If we were to go to breakfast/brunch I would take him/her to this place downtown called Atlanta Breakfast Club because they have the best breakfast and my favorite thing to get from there is their peach cobbler french toast. We will then choose a day to go to main event, top golf, sixflags, white waters, and the aquarium maybe. I love theme parks and water parks and so do he/she so I know we would have a great time.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shoutout my family, friends and my bestfriend family as well for being my support system throughout my whole process. They all supported my ideas and also gave me ideas that would help me progress along the way. I started my business in October of 2020 and with all of the great ideas and support I have, the business has been great abd has been progressing so much. Having that support and encouragement makes you go harder for what you would like to do in life. To also know that I am doing everything in honor of my bestfriend and giving most of my profit to something he loved as well, which was track makes me feel so great.
