We had the good fortune of connecting with Kayla Sutton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kayla, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I feel like anything worth having is always worth taking a risk on. That can be true in not only your career but also in your relationships and yourself. The times in my life where I’ve made massive progress have always been when I’ve decided to take some sort of risk. For me, taking risks is a part of life, something necessary for progress. From my experience, I’ve always been able to navigate what to do next based off of what terrified me the most. Whatever I can’t stop thinking about, if it scares me and if it’s rational, I just go for it!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Whew. Where do I start?! I like to call myself a storyteller because I just do a bit of everything if I’m completely honest. Although, I started as an actress, professionally, I consider myself to be an actress, screenwriter, and a casting assistant. Currently I am a signed actress with East Coast Talent Agency. I’ve been with Barbra Garvey for about four years now. Extremely thankful for everything I’ve worked towards. Acting is tough though because nothing is certain. I am confident that my time is coming though. On the indie side of things I have a digital series I’m currently shooting with Arthouse Digital titled Black Love Future coming this Summer 2021. I’m always writing so it’s always difficult to answer whenever people ask what scripts I’m working on. Currently I have two scripts in the film festival cucuit. One half-hour comedy pilot titled Blacklash, which was an official selection at 2020’s Atlanta Comedy Film Festival and another comedy short script titled SSB which has done well so far and will be featured as an official selection at 2021’s Women’s Comedy Film Festival Atlanta. Now, I swear I’m almost done, I have also had the privilege to work as a Casting Assistant for Social Society, on the AllBlk streaming platform, as well as The Titan Games S2 (BG Casting PA), Boomerang S2 (BG Casting PA), and Black Women OWN the Conversation S1 (Audienece Coordinator). I will also like to add that this was no easy or quick journey. What people do not see are the hundreds of auditions, hundreds of no’s and the many MANY sleepless nights.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
One of my favorite spots in Atlanta is the Landmark’s Midtown Art Cinema Center. It’s where I go whenever I want to see an indie movie or just want to watch something with less people in the theater. It’s a different experience that I enjoy. Also the spot I oh so “casually” suggest my tinder date takes me. Another place I typically love to go is Krog Street. It’s got just about everything. Food, music, ice cream, and the belt line. Great for walks and enjoying the weather.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
One person that I definitely have to give credit to in my career and life is Heather Bivens. She is the owner of Hylton Casting, a full-service casting company in Alanta, and such an incredible woman. Not only was she willing to bring me onto projects but she has taught me so much with grace, patience, poise, and professionalism. She is the epitome of hardworking and I can guarantee you that everyone who knows or has worked with her would agree. Heather has presented me with so many incredible industry opportunities and I will forever be thankful. So shout out to Heather Bivens!
