Meet Kayla Price | Entrepreneur

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kayla Price and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kayla, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I started my first unofficial business in 5th grade. I would take markers and color the collar/wood part of pencils and sell them to my classmates for .25 cents. I also tried to start a skincare business with my cousin around this time as well but didn’t have the knowledge, resources, or funds to really get started. When I was a junior in high school (17 years old) I was really frustrated with the experience I was having with my curly hair. It was dry and breaking off and it was something I was extremely insecure about. For context, the journey I’ve been on with my hair has always been really personal to me and something that I’ve spent a considerable amount of time on. So, I decided to start making my own products to see if I could solve the problem I was having and I did. I knew that I could formulate hair products differently and that it would add great value to the marketplace.

What should our readers know about your business?
What sets Kapri apart from others in terms of our actual product is the quality of our formulations. I use organic herbs in all of our products which has been great for giving our customers results they haven’t gotten from any other products. I also don’t use any filler ingredients to drive down product costs or use cheaper alternatives to more expensive ingredients to save money. When it comes to formulating my products, no expense is spared and this helps give people more options because lots of products in the stores are made with the same handful of ingredients. I got to where I am today by trial and error and not letting my failures hold me back. Growing a business is definitely not easy however for me it is the most rewarding and fulfilling thing I’ve ever done. Most of the success I’ve had has come from posting on social media and working with influencers. I was able to overcome challenges by continuing to invest in my business education and learning how to tackle the problems I was having. For example, I was having problems growing my instagram page for years and then I invested in a reels course and was able to grow 2,000 followers in just 1 weekend shortly after. My mindset has always been ‘if there’s a problem there has to be a solution.’ I just remember that everything can be figured out and nobody said it was going to be easy. I definitely think you need a certain mindset to be an entrepreneur because the challenges really do test how bad you want it. I’ve learned that even if you make a mistake or fail or something doesn’t go your way it doesn’t mean that life is over. I used to think one mistake would ruin my business or mean that I wouldn’t be successful and I’ve learned quickly that that is not how it works at all. I want the world to know that it’s important to follow your dreams and give back to people using your strengthens and passions. I think we all have dreams and strengths that make the world a better place and we need more of that. I want the world to know that Kapri is more than just hair products. In each package I send I include a note to my customers reminding them how valuable they are trying to encourage them to stay strong and joyful in this life because I know it’s hard. I’ve also started sending out different treats and freebies as well just to make the experience with our brand more personal.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One of my favorite restaurants in Boston is Fogo de Chao which is nice because they have locations all over the US. There is another restaurant on Newbury st called Joe’s American Bar and Grill which has the best shrimp scampi! Gyu Kaku is a Japanese BBQ option and has a great all you can eat option that leaves you feeling full all day. I love hanging out at the Charles River and going for walks in Cambridge. In Boston there’s always a new restaurant to try or an attraction opening up like the museum of ice cream which I visited in another state and I’m excited it’s just a short drive away now. Whenever I need a staycation I book a room at Encore Boston Harbor because it’s my definition of luxury! The rooms are modern and breathtaking and the service is amazing. They have a gorgeous gym that overlooks the water and helps me reset whenever I need to.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would say my mom has been helpful in this process by allowing me to have a space to grow my business without worrying about the financial stresses of life. This has allowed me to take more risks and spend more time learning and growing without so much pressure. There was also an acceptance of me choosing the entrepreneurship route instead of being pressured to choose what may be perceived as a more stable career path.
