We had the good fortune of connecting with Kay Kaution and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kay, why did you pursue a creative career?
The main reason I make music is to illustrate my mood, thoughts, and outlook on life at the moment. The feeling a particular instrumental can give you is like reading one page of a diary. It’s important to find your method to express yourself. Without that release, you’re just stuck with a bag of problems and no way to empty the contents. Real world obstacles will always be there, and we can feel alone in those struggles. My main mission is to be apart of that healing process; not only for the audience who gravitates toward it, but also for every single artist I work with. No matter if you want to turn up, criticize the world around us, or provide a deep dive into who you are; I want to help make that come true.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started making music technically when I was in 6th grade. Our band class had a week-long field trip to the Apple Store in a mall. Back then, I didn’t pass the city bounds of Detroit so embarrassingly enough I was excited. Me and a childhood friend/collaborator Lex was my partner and I’m sure we created the worst 13 second “song” ever. I was proud of it, we made that from our own creation. Even if it was a collage of ideas and immaturity, I would continue to dive into my brain to find that feeling again.
Over the years, I would shift all of my free time (even time that should’ve been saved for sleep) making beats in my bedroom. Day after day, it was an improvement on the day before. You would think that the confidence would follow that same upward trend, when in fact it was the inverse. The more skilled I became, the more self-critiquing would happen. I tend to get wrapped up in perfectionism and imposter syndrome not realizing that’s taking away the essence of why I started in the first place. Once I started to believe in my original process, the thrill of musical adventure grew again. That’s not to say the doubts disappear. You slowly learn that doubts are potholes hoping that you fall in and divert you from getting you to your destination.
I stand for people that don’t always see the vision. I stand for people who are not scared to bring variation. With my music I hope to connect. If you absolutely love or absolutely hate what I bring, as long it evokes a strong emotion, I can say my job is done.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ok so first of all, we’re going past downtown, past midtown, past the eastside and going directly to the westside and partaking in some coney island, and I do not mean the city! I’m grabbing two grilled chicken salads for us with extra pita and a pink lemonade for me. After that, we can go downtown and walk around Campus Martius and absorb the feeling of Detroit. From there we can walk to the Little Caesars Arena to catch a Pistons game. I’ll let them try to buy something from the concessions, although they should know what the deal is with the prices. I’m the weirdest case of an introvert where I always want to be active before the meeting but to myself during the meeting. With that being said, its a 50/50 chance of walking around looking at art or completely enjoying the nightlife. Either way, we can end the night off finding random people to freestyle with in the middle of the street.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I always think of the people in Detroit who followed and believed in my passion when I was undeveloped, naïve and unaware of where life would even take me. A great young business mind in Joshua May who has been a beacon of knowledge, and a prime example of a person who will not quit under any circumstances. Shoutout to Intertwined Entertainment. A creative spider in Jett Radio who has 8 legs in every artistic pouch. I can’t even begin to box in his abilities. Shoutout to Lonely United. A infinite source of inspiration in Xenn who pumps me with belief even when I think the well is way past empty. Shoutout to You.
