We had the good fortune of connecting with Katrina Sloan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katrina, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
I haven’t quite figured out the whole work-life balance thing—I’m not even sure I fully believe in it. But I do believe in giving your all to what truly makes you happy, and doing your best with everything else.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are the only indoor playground located near Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, and we take great pride in maintaining a safe and clean environment. Our exclusive toddler area is separated from the bigger kids to ensure everyone can play safely and comfortably.

The Play Pad opened during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic when lenders were hesitant to support new businesses. I started this business because, in South Metro Atlanta, there were no safe indoor play spaces for children in our community. Knowing that a franchise indoor play facility wouldn’t come to our area, I decided to create it myself!

The Play Pad was self-funded with the support of family and friends. Moving forward, the ideal solution would be to form a partnership with an institution dedicated to supporting small, minority-owned businesses.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I were planning the perfect staycation or week in Atlanta, every day would have a different theme. As a foodie, I’d start by exploring a variety of food halls across the city each day hitting a new spot like Westside Provisions, the new hall on Moreland, or the one near Perimeter. Atlanta’s culinary scene is really thriving, and I love discovering what’s new.

To balance things out, I’d mix in some wellness maybe a spa day at Le hua Spa on off of Cobb Pkwy or even a full-day retreat at a hotel with a rooftop pool. Atlanta has some great spots for that kind of self-care.

Of course, I’d also enjoy my husband’s cooking he’s a chefso we’d plan a night or two around his dishes. And no week would be complete without spending time with my child, who are like my sons. We’d probably take a quick overnight trip to Great Wolf Lodge or Callaway Gardens.

For the evenings, I’d make sure we hit a few of my favorite fine dining spots like Bacchanalia on the Westside or Canoe. I’d also want to try something new I haven’t explored much of what people are calling the “New Atlanta,” and that would be a fun adventure to wrap up the week.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shout out to my husband, my Dad and our moms-the best grandmothers in the world! Ashley Reid with Wise Ocean.
