We had the good fortune of connecting with Karnesha Slaughter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Karnesha, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
During the pandemic, I, like many others, began working from home. I found myself with a lot of free time. And I figured it was a really good time to act on the ideas I’ve been having for a while around starting my own business. I really love jewelry and I’m someone that is always wearing different pieces and people ask me where I got them from. So I figured why not combine my passion with something that would make me happy and start a jewelry business.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Crown and Clover is a Black-owned jewelry brand. We specialize in curating and creating custom pieces. One thing that sets us apart from other brands is that we predominantly use women of color as models. Most jewelry lines do not show the jewelry tones on brown and black skin. I think it’s important for people to see representation of themself. I have learned that it is really important to advocate for your brand and speak about your business no matter the setting. I have also learned the importance of good quality pieces, things that will set you apart from other affordable jewelry lines.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One of the things I love the most about Atlanta is that there is a thriving black community. I could go a whole day in Atlanta and only be in Black spaces that are uplifting, fun, and a vibe with other like minded individuals.
Definitely would start the weekend off at Fin & Feathers for brunch on Edgewood. It’s a lit brunch with delicious food. Next get some steps in at the Westside Reservoir Park and then stop in at The Works for some dessert and maybe a comedy show.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my shout out to my baby niece Zoey. She’s 7 months old and the light of my life.
