We had the good fortune of connecting with Karlton & Shinny Sutherland and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Karlton & Shinny, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
After 10 years in a marriage filled with dysfunction and slowly growing apart, we faced a major fork in the road -infidelity. Fighting the pressure to divorce and the recommendation to separate we chose to investigate why these things were happening. Up until that point, we lived a life claiming to be Christian but our movements were lukewarm, at best. Facing our current circumstances – broken trust, unmet expectations, and a family now divided because of my infidelity, we turned to our church for guidance. We were advised to attend a marriage class provided by our church. During that class, we gained a wealth of understanding and countless truths which helped us pinpoint the root of our issues. As a result of that class, we forgave one another and we started over. We rebuilt our marriage on the truth of what God says about us and according to biblical principles. We were hand-picked from that class to lead and instruct future classes. After leading countless couples through the very same process we found our purpose in helping struggling marriages. As we began to share our story with couples outside the church we were overwhelmed with requests to help other couples in similar situations. So, we created a business where we mentor married couples in the hopes that families in our surrounding communities would be stronger and healthier.

What should our readers know about your business?
We started our business, This Love, with the intent to merge our real-life experiences with traditional marriage mentoring as a husband and wife team. We invested in ourselves, learning how to run our day-to-day business which is an ongoing process. Being a husband and wife team, we’ve learned how to work together and utilize our strengths as individuals.

This Love is a safe space for couples looking to start again in their marriage relationships. We are excited to lead married couples through a journey of discovery, forgiveness, and reconciliation providing them with tools that will last a lifetime.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
That’s easy… first, we would take them to Ponce City Market for an afternoon of browsing the local shops and restaurants. They have everything from good burgers to vegan entrees. We would cap off the evening with live entertainment at The City Winery or St. James Live.

Atlanta has some of the best dine-in movie theatres such as IPIC in Colony Square which also has many restaurants and a flavorful ambiance.

Summertime is the best because of the outdoor venues for concerts and other outdoor activities such as the JazzFest and the Art Festivals.

Atlanta has so much culture and history that there are countless things to get into.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We give an enormous amount of credit to the marriage ministry at Victory Church in Norcross, GA. They welcomed us with loving arms, pointed us to God, and led us through a journey of reconciliation and discovery. Victory Church provided the platform in which we discovered our purpose.
