We had the good fortune of connecting with Karen Eber and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Karen, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I had spend the first half of my career in Fortune 500 corporations helping them change the way they developed their culture and their leaders and how to use storytelling. I became a bit of a corporate anthropologist – seeing what worked and didn’t…noticing patterns that companies fell into and didn’t know how to avoid. I realized I had a different perspective and practical steps that made a big impact. I wanted to open my company to help others learn what they truly need to do to transform their culture and build their leaders. It has allowed for me to have a greater impact in the places of my deepest strengths.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business is Eber Leadership Group. It is a boutique that focuses on helping companies build healthy cultures, creating empathic & inspiring leaders, curious teams and storytellers throughout organizations. All with the ultimate goal to create workplaces where people thrive. My background is in psychology and the work I do is based on research for what drives our thinking and behaviors in neuroscience to what impacts our interpersonal interactions. My company offers strategic cultural transformations, year-long leadership development experiences and one-on-one executive coaching and skill building in key areas like storytelling. I also specialize in keynotes to bring these ideas to larger audiences at scale. I have a TED talk: How your brain responds to stories and why they are critical for leaders: https://www.ted.com/talks/karen_eber_how_your_brain_responds_to_stories_and_why_they_re_crucial_for_leaders This has made me work much easier. People already get an introduction to a bit of what I do through the talk and allows for a different starting dialogue. I don’t believe anyone has an easy path in their careers. They are inherent with struggle as you examine where your strengths are and what you no longer want to continue doing. It is those times of struggle that ultimately shape who you are. Throughout my career I’ve had high profile experiences: from my work being included in an issue of Harvard Business Review to Global Head of Culture roles to team coaching and facilitation I regularly do with the C-suite to the TED talk. Each of those came from consistent focus and hard work on building out my strengths. This work has taken me all over the world. I’ve had many fun adventures abroad and recognize that we are all more alike than we are different. I am most excited about helping people-centric companies make positive changes to their culture, their leaders and teams and how they use storytelling to make work interesting.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We’d take a stroll or bike ride on the beltline. Then we’d go to the botanical gardens. We’d hit up midtown for lunch and finish the evening atop Ponce City Markets to watch the sunset and eat dinner. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
For my parents who gave me the roots and the wings. To my husband who supports me in taking flight. For my niece and nephew who inspire me to build a better world for them.
