We had the good fortune of connecting with Kanetra Vaughn and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kanetra, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
There actually wasn’t a direct thought process behind starting my own business as far as my business goes because it was my plan b that turned out to be plan a all along. My first choice was going to college for Business management in order to manage someone else’s business but it turned out I ended up managing my own business in cosmetology, when I figured out college wasn’t for me.

What should our readers know about your business?
I am proud to say that I’ve been in the cosmetology industry since 2007 when I first started school and I must say that I’ve maintained consistency in
Showing up for my business and I’ve done it in the most professional manner possible even when it was hard to do. I think that is one thing I am most proud of with my business is that I always strive to maintain a professional and friendly environment with my clients. One lesson I’ve grown to understand more in my career is that “All money ain’t good money”. I have a spirit of good discernment for my business and Im very appreciative of that gift that God has given me. One thing I want the world to know about me and my brand(Hair by Kstylz) is that I am a loyal steward of my craft.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Honestly, I struggle with finding the perfect spot that meets all of my needs right now because I have children and I mostly cater to kid friendly places. So I would have to say 1 stop would be the belt line. I am still a fan of Pappadeaux seafood kitchen so we would definitely go there and maybe a baseball game at the battery because I enjoy the battery every time I go.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mom, she played a significant role(which is no surprise) in me starting my career in cosmetology. I never wanted to be a cosmetologist career wise. When college didn’t work out for me, her exact words were “why don’t you go to school for hair and stop wasting those people money going to that school” lol. I laugh about it now because it was the truth. Once I began cosmetology school I started working in a salon(Hair a la Parisienne) as a shampoo assistant. That is where learned a lot of core values about working in the industry. The ladies at that salon really shaped me into the stylist that I am as well.
