We had the good fortune of connecting with Kamilla Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kamilla, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
The most important lesson my business/career has taught me is to leave my comfort zone. I have to make sacrifices in order to grow and succeed within my career.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m from Mississippi. I stepped out on Faith in 2018 and moved to Atlanta, exactly one month after my college graduation. I took my last $100 and drove to ATL for a job interview and never went back. I consider myself rare; one of a kind. Although I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication/Broadcasting, I stepped into comedy. I view it as a “calling. Even as a Stand Up Comedian I stand out amongst a lot of my peers. My style is unique and different. My natural aura, personality, sense of humor and resilience sets me apart from others. I’m proud of myself because no matter what I go through, I always bounce back and elevate. I’ve been homeless, account in the negatives, etc, I’m proud of how I beat the odds that were against me. I’m also proud of myself because of the sacrifices & hard work I’ve put in. I’ve had the pleasure of opening up for & working with some big names in this industry. To name a few, Mo’Nique, Michael Blackson, Flex Alexander, Michael Colyar. I’ve met Kountry Wayne, T.I., Mike Epps, Bill Bellamy, Regina King, Vivica Fox, Karlous Miller, DC Youngfly, Kenan Thompson plus more. I performed on one of Kenan’s showcases and was one of the top 3 perceived comedians out of about 40 in Atlanta that WOW’d the crowd and was labeled “hilarious” by a few celebrity judges. I hosted the first open mic at the all new Atlanta Comedy Theater Underground. I have my own mic night there and had the pleasure of giving other comedians stage time. I enjoy creating content too. I want to give a big shout out to Comedian/Actor/Internet Sensation Jordan Jackson for believing in me and working with me. I’ve gotten to where I am professionally by putting in the work and being dedicated. I stay focus and block out any distractions. No, it hasn’t been easy because I’ve faced many challenges. Being at rock bottom has helped me learn along the way and showed me a place that I never want to return. Definitely life-changing learning experiences. I’ve learned that, it doesn’t matter if I fall down, as long as I get back up and keep going. I want the world to know that I’ve taken the stairs, no shortcuts. Im still grinding, but I won’t stop until I’m successful. I’m the definition of “got it out the mud”. I have my own brand/merchandise too. For bookings: email: kdaviscomedy@gmail.com
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I have a few favorite spots that I enjoy in the city. If my best friend was visiting for a week, I would take her to BQE Lounge, Fins & Feathers, or the Sugar Factory——it’s a vibe. I love a good drink, food, and music. . I would take her to the mall-fun places like-bowling, Top Golf, or even to the Selfie Museum.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Two special people that I would like to give credit to is Raheem Holt (comedian, actor, casting director) and Katie Huston (model, business owner). They both hold a special place in my life and was there during some challenging times.
