We had the good fortune of connecting with Kalika Evans and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kalika, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I decided to pursue a creative career because it felt like nothing else fit me. Anytime I worked in any career or service, I was just so unhappy. I knew I had bills to pay and things to get done, but my mother always taught me that there’s no point in working a job that makes you unhappy your whole life. So I decided that I would rather work very hard on something I love and enjoy, than work hard on something that makes me miserable.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m an artist in so many ways, so it’s always hard to talk about one thing. I love cosplay, makeup, photography, writing, drawing, and the list goes on. I tend to pick up on anything I’m interested in at the moment! The things that have always stuck with me though, are cosplaying and drawing. Being a plus-size woman in cosplay has always been a bit of a struggle because I’ve had to make my own costumes, but in the long run, it helped my skills. I started entering contests with my cosplays, which helped continue to fund some of my work! The biggest obstacle is always looking and being different from the characters I cosplay. People always like to remind you that you don’t look right, fit in, or are much darker or larger than the character. It took years for me to fight to feel good in my cosplays, even know I struggle, however, It hurts much less. Through artwork and cosplay, it’s always hard to find the finances to keep working, but I have a good support system.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m normally a person who likes to stay at home, but when I have friends hanging out I try to pick some nice quiet and fun spots. Normally I’d want to go to a cafe or a little tea spot to talk and enjoy the atmosphere. Though depending on the person, we may even hit up an arcade and then go eat at a restaurant. I live in Las Vegas, so there are always fun little new spots popping up to visit.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Honestly, the biggest person who deserves credit for me being myself is my mother. Even in a household where we had nothing, where my father was abusive and never believed in me, and we had to fight to survive, she always encouraged me to do what I wanted and reach for the stars. When I was very young no matter what career I wanted she would always tell me I could do it. From wanting to be a Marine Biologist to wanting to work in the Arts, she always pushed me and helped me get what support I needed. Now that support has passed onto my husband, though my mom is still a driving force, my husband has continued to push me and support me in all my talents. He’s even gone so far as to learn photography so he could be another person to take my photos and help me do videos for my work. I don’t know where I would be without them.
