We had the good fortune of connecting with KaLen “Apollomusiq” Maton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi KaLen “Apollomusiq”, what’s the most important thing you’ve done for your children?
As a parent the most important thing I’ve done to make a impact on my daughter life is to work on myself. I have a lot of unsettled emotions within myself from my childhood. In 2019, things I’ve been through with my parents or just life in general took a toll on me mentally and emotionally to point of alcohol abuse and suicidal behavior. In the black community we tend to push aside our trauma and run away from things like mental health because the weight of all that baggage can be a bit much to deal with head on. Besides if we aren’t taught how to be aware of ourselves we are left to believe that depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, PTSD etc..is the way of life and that is the normal state of mind. I made a promise to my daughter that the generational curses and passed on trauma stops with me and I will do so by controlling which parts of my past I allow to have impact on my life and take the proper steps in the right direction towards true healing and love. I didn’t know what it truly meant to love my child until I learned to love myself first. Loving myself enough to know the importance of self awareness which was the first step to my healing journey. Forgiving my parents for the mistakes they’ve made which allowed me to understand my parents circumstances at that time. They grew up in a era where mental health wasn’t a discussion. Looking back I see now that they were showing signs of depression and anxiety but they just didn’t know how to deal with it nor were they equipment with the vocabulary to express that. Their way of coping was to distract themselves so much to the point where they didn’t have time to look in the mirror and face their ugly truths. I’m proud of the work my parents put in to raise me because I understand now that they did the best they could by any means. My greatest hope is that one day my daughter will understand the importance of self love and self awareness because without those two you’ll never know what it truly means to love someone or be loved by someone.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a R&B singer songwriter born in the city of Detroit. I was heavily influenced by Alicia Keys and Jamie foxx at a early age. Wanting to be like them lead me down a path of becoming a singer and songwriter then eventually an entertainer. What set me aside from other artist is my style of music and character. Some people like to describe me as raw and nostalgic yet smooth and sexy. When attending my shows people tend to walk away feeling inspired and motivated not just by my amazing stage presence but the amount of love and respect I not only have for myself but for those around me. The thing I’m most proud of is my growth as a individual. I like to believe that everyday I am growing into the person GOD created me to be. I got to where I am today professionally by staying consistent and standing solid on my foundation of belief. Betting on myself wasn’t easy at all. It comes with a lot of ups and downs just like everything else in life but the hardest part about it all is protecting my energy from those in the world who vibrates at low frequencies. The best way to overcome that is being conscious of what you pour your energy into, how you think on the daily basis and how you treat other people. The universe responds to everything we say, think and do regardless if it’s negative or positive. That was an important lesson I had to learn through experience. One thing I want the world to know about my brand is that Apollomusiq isn’t a representation of one person. It’s a representation of every soul on this plant who feel voiceless and fights everyday just to thrive. Rather that’s on your career path, in relationships or just life period Apollomusiq is that voice of peace, love and encouragement. I’m working to be the change I want see and I hope to encourage others to do the same.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh you coming to the city? Say less! As soon as you touch down we going to see mama dukes. When I’m visiting home that’s the first place I got to in order to recharge. I feel most connected to home when I’m with the only person that literally been there since day one, my mother. My mom will give you the ultimate welcome. She’s gonna put all of my business on display for you to go home and repeat it to your friends. After witnessing me be embarrassed for an hour we’re going to get some grub from the coney. You are about to eat some of the best food you’ve had in your life. After you wake up from your food coma we going to one of my favorite spots “Exclusives”! I am a cannabis lover but the best part about this place is that it’s drive thru (yes, a drive thru dispensary). There is nothing like some good ole LEGAL medical/recreational marijuana from Detroit. I am not much of a club or partying type but if you want to spend the night out we definitely going to hit up local events dedicated for creatives. There are some of the most talented people you’d ever meet. It’s not just artist. There are graphic designers, painters, dancers, DJs, Models, Entrepreneurs etc. I mean you name it we have it. Everything we do in the city we do it at the highest level. If you want to spend your time downtown we have some the best restaurants, bowling alleys and arcades. The best thing about those places is that after 9pm on a Friday or Saturday night in 90 degree weather it becomes a party. It don’t matter where you are. Even just walking down the streets you’ll catch vibe at almost every corner.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I first want to shoutout my lord and savior Yahshua for allowing me to wake up every day equipped with everything I need to make a impact on those I meet. Second I want to shoutout my manager J’Quante “McDream” Mcghee and my mentor Rondall “RonDada” Brazier for supporting and encouraging me every day to follow my heart. Those brothers work relentlessly to help push me closer to achieving everything I have been planning and preparing for my entire life. They are huge fans of my music and the #1 reason I decide to keep pushing forward.
