Meet Kailia Mcswain | Aspiring Nail Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kailia Mcswain and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kailia, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?

I just knew I wanted to impact people lives  and give people a stylish look while doing it. I have always had the drive to hustle and be my own boss it all started officially in college but I always knew I was a boss/ceo cause that how I carried myself  , but I start with selling hair ,that was successful but it became to be too overwhelming. So then i thought about doing nails. I got some encouraging words from my sister Ashley and i just started practicing on myself and friends, and it really just took off from there. It was rough start but i never liked anything to come easy, cause being successful isn’t always going to be easy. And that how KlawdByKay came about.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

Being a nail artist it has it pro and cons but i love doing it so the cons are really just pros that need improvement in my eyes. I try to never think negatively when it comes to my business KlawdByKay. In 2019 I had just graduated Albany State University and I didn’t want to continue doing education path due to the spike of covid. So i started my nail journey in the year 2020 was just messing around didn’t really take doing nails seriously just because i felt i wouldn’t get the clients . So i knew cosmetology school was next, so i signed up at Albany Technical College, i didn’t even make it pass week 1 I  drop out , sad situation I know but i never knew you had to learn hair and etc while in school I should have  did some research before applying those where the  only type of  schools in my area at time and I didn’t want to do hair and all the extra stuff just nails. So that what drove me to wanna leave Albany,Ga and i final did And i moved back to the city ( Atlanta) , now my goal is to go to a nail school in my area and option my license in the year 2023.

What set me apart from other is each time you sit in my chair your going to get an experience we’re you there for 45 min pedicure or if your there for 4 hr nail set , i make all my clients feel welcome from the time the click my booking site until the time the leave their appointment, i have became some of my clients therapist to were they have space place to cry, vent I even offer silent appointments just if they having rough day or just want some peace and quiet that’s what they get. But whatever they may need KlawdByKay is going make sure she make can that accessible .

When it comes to being proud i think I have always said my motto is “keep hustling until they ask you are you hiring” that symbolizes boss status in my eyes. But i am mainly proud because i actually have people asking to be apart of my brand, ladies wanting to model my work and etc and that just make me so excited because i remember a time i couldn’t get soul

To book with me and that was the most discouraging part of my journey but i push through prayed and just developed got better with my content posting and my craft alone and people start booking

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Im such a homebody!! I really hope someone wouldnt rely on my to be their tour guide of the city lol. I am More of a let pack up and go to Jamaica type of friend but i love my city for sure . It just the traffic i would definitely not let an out of town friend drive in the city at all , this Atlanta traffic is different breed. We would definitely have a great time . when i say i have notes full of city life experiences down to fun attractions ,to chill vibes, and mainly good food to eat. i love a good food outing!!!! Lol

So first we would definitely have to explore Massages my favorite place Rejuvenate Body& Spa of Roswell rd, then we would do the Atlanta City Pass package where you go to Georgia Aquarium, World of coca-cola, the zoo and more!!! Then we would find nice food spot maybe Fin and Feathers in Edgewood or Douglasville if we want a lit food experience or if we feeling classy we may go to Fade and Facet in Duluth. I’m
Not a club life type of gal so i don’t know the lit clubs and stuff but hookah lounge or any type lounge would do because i left for school i would always go to Sahara hookah lounge or house of hookah.

Some of my favorite places would definitely be Cheesecake Factory, but you can’t come to Atlanta and not get the famous meal from
American Deil 10 pc mild with lemon pepper sprinkles all flats with peach drink!!!! Lol definitely have to experience the downtown night life by the Ferris Wheel. I just say everyone should experience Atlanta life once it and enjoyable experience wether you were born and raised here or just visiting

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Yes i would love to shout out my boyfriend Tae and my sister Ashley without these two the journey would be hard, their is no amount of thank you would be enough. They have done it all supporting me,encouraged me, motivated me so many and invested in me wether it was just a ear to listen to me vent about my business or when i wanted to stop they both pushed me to not give up no matter what obstacles get thrown my way. My boyfriend my heart he literally purchased everything i need to start doing nails and that just showed me he truly believed in me from the start. My sister she really been here from start of it all she booked appointments even when hers wouldn’t last a week she still came back and help me grow within my skill she pushes me out of my element every time and i appreciate that cause that has help me become a better nail tech. When i make it big these two would never have worry about a thing cause ima have them forever
