We had the good fortune of connecting with Kai September and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kai, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
From a young age I believe I saw the world differently than most. The moment that I could understand what music was, everything around me became music. At a young age I started playing instruments. By the time I was in high school I was skilled in playing the piano, bass guitar, cello, drums, recording, engineering, and mixing my own music. Though music has always been my greatest passion, I believe I was born with with the gift of being a shining light in the dark. I record my songs in an authentically vulnerable space and people receive it on a personal level. I feel passionate about connecting with people and through my music I do just that.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I create music from the soul and for the soul. I don’t write any of my music down, I just go in the booth and speak on whatever I’m feeling or may be going through at that time. It definitely takes a certain level of vulnerability which isn’t always easy for me, but I pride myself on creating music that heals through sharing my story with the world. Being an influential person who people look to for healing has its ups and downs, sometimes It can get overwhelming balancing my career and my own mental health but having faith and maintaining consistency regardless of the circumstances got me to where I am today. I believe in believing.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am from Beaufort, SC which is surrounded by water. There are palmetto trees and lots of beaches that are beautiful to see. If I had someone come to visit we’d definitely go to “The Sands” which is the only drive up beach in the state of South Carolina. At “The Sands” there is no parking, you can just pull your car right up to the water. Beaufort is also known for it’s seafood so we’d definitely have to sit down at this restaurant called “Lady’s Island Dockside”. They have a variety of seafood on their menu and a beautiful view over the water. I’d also have take them to see the “Waterfront Park” it’s located downtown Beaufort. It’s a Huge park that stretches along the water with a view of the Beaufort Bridge. There’s stores and restaurants along the waterfront as well. One of my favorite places to stop by is the “Yo Yo’s Ice cream”. It’s always a vibe to walk along the water eating the best ice cream in town.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to all the Kai September fans and followers. From the time where I only had one, to the point of having thousands, their support, kindness, and love was motivation for me to stay focused and keep pushing through my lowest days. They give me a sense of purpose in this world. I wouldn’t be where or who I am today without them so for them I am forever grateful.
