We had the good fortune of connecting with K Sarai and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi K, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
I think the most important lesson for me was to trust myself. It’s so interesting, sometimes as you’re talking about a goal of yours, people can still see their own version of it. Not necessarily in a bad way, but people can sometimes steer you in their own direction of how they think you should sound or look or move. It’s important to know yourself first and then trust yourself to make the best decision in any given moment.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
It all started in the 90s lol. I remember singing around Christmas time with my family. I sang the song from the movie The Preachers Wife. I was so nervous to perform in front of everybody but it was so cool to have my dad play piano while I sang. There were other moments but I think that was the initial spark on my journey. I’ve evolved so much as a person and an artist since then. I’ve written I’m not sure how many songs but some of my favorite work is on my latest album Summer Nights. This album really pulled at me because it came after I felt like I hit a plateau in writing, singing and creating. I was just genuinely unhappy. I felt like I was really creative but I was trying to tell the same story a hundred different ways.
One day I was in a session with the team and we were listening to tracks that he had already made. I came across this really dope one and I was like “Thats it. That’s the one” but I was really nervous because I didn’t know how to approach it. Should I sing it this way, write it from that angle? Things like that. Mind you, I’m not very confident in myself right now. And the other writer tells me “Don’t write it how somebody else would write it. Write it how K would write it.” And it hit me then. I have no CLUE what that sounds like. My new plan at that point was to just get on the mic and start telling MY story! So that’s what I did for a few days.
And after I spent a few days just talking through my life story on the mic I realized….I FOUND MY OWN SOUND!!! That song became the single and album title Summer Nights. I’ve never been more proud of a body of work I’ve created honestly! It’s my truth about love and relationships, how we view ourselves and the world.
Above everything, trust the process. Sometimes you’re not even far from the finish line but it’s that last leg, the times when you think you’re too tired, too sad or not creative enough that most people quit. It’s not the end. You might just need a quick break. Take a break and come back to it. If it’s yours, it’ll be there!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
So we would definitely do brunch at a First Watch. They’re cute and the foods good! We could visit the Botanical Gardens to walk around and enjoy some really pretty scenery. I’m outdoor-sy. Now in the evening we’ve got a few options. We could go skating at Cascade, walk the belt line or we could hit the West End breweries for a couple drinks. Depending on what part of the country they’re from, they may not have had the high-class, fine-dining that is Waffle House. This is a must at any given moment. I stand by that statement. We have to spend Saturday in North Georgia though. I love the city but I’m a country girl. There’s Little River and Dicks Creek if you want to spend some time on the water. Then again, it’s north Georgia, you could also just ride til you see the mountains. They really are blue! Closer to the city, we could relax at Morgan Falls park.
We have to hit up Edgewood for Harolds Chicken and Ice Bar though. Even just walking that strip is nice when it’s warm out. Beautiful city!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout definitely goes to my family and my team. They’ve all supported me in so many ways not even just musically. I’m so grateful to have people around me who care enough to cheer me on when I’m up and support me when I’m down. Good lookin out y’all.
