We had the good fortune of connecting with Justin Miller and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Justin, we’d love to hear more about your end-goal, professionally.
My end goal is to explore the mediums of both moving and still images to find the increasingly organic and carnal ways to communicate for my partners and clients. It’s difficult for me to get excited about projects that don’t push boundaries and if I could make a career out of pushing the possibilities of moving and still images I would be ecstatic.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art prioritizes experience over information, it’s the driving idea behind both my moving and still images. I’m not too interested to explaining something, I’d much rather make something that makes someone feel like they were there and allows them to draw their own to the material.

Easily, the thing I most proud of is the mural of one of my photographs that resides on Cleveland Ave through my work with Antonio Lewis. I’ve had an amazing opportunity to collaborate with him and his Organize to Mobilize organization to bring light to important causes both in Atlanta and beyond.

I am where I am today by focusing on process over results. It wasn’t long after I started looking at success as a result of process that I began to notice results.

My journey is non-traditional, I’m almost entirely self-taught, and in all honesty I think it gives me a distinct advantage. I think my process, philosophy, and work is a reflection of a curriculum entirely curated through personal curiosity and experience which like to think results in a uniquely intimate style.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The Earl is a must, easily my favorite spot in the city, before COVID I could sit there for hours with a book or a journal and a seemingly endless supply of Miller High Life, not to mention their food is phenomenal.

We’re definitely grabbing multiple coffees from Hodgepodge, amazing people and coffee.

We’re getting burgers from Little’s and Pizza’s from Grant Central.

I wish I had more than that, but I’m a creature of habit. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My brother Demetrius Freeman showed me that you can make your wildest dreams a reality. Had I not had a front row seat to watching him become one of the best photojournalists in the world, I don’t think I would ever think it possible to achieve what I’ve achieved.
