Meet Jurena G. Cantrell | Integrated Marketing Executive

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jurena G. Cantrell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jurena G., how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
I think balance is key to a successful life and as you get older your perspective does change. After college, my life was all about work. I still found time to spend with family/friends and travel, but mostly I was working. When I became a mother/wife in my 30s, I had to be really cautious of my time so that one did not overshadow the other. I didn’t always get it right, but over time I learned you MUST take time off for other things, that way, you are recharged and capable of handling what’s coming.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business is J. Glass Communications and we “magnify brands and creatives”. By that I mean, we create media campaigns, write press releases/bios, pitch media, coordinate events and broadcast media tours for our clients.
I’ve gotten where I am today because of the people I have been blessed to work with over the years. Most of my experience was gained by working with entrepreneurs who were pioneering in their fields of endeavors such as Brian Ransom, one of the first black sports agents in Atlanta; Kevin Foley and Chuck Edmundson, who pioneered the broadcast PR industry; and Dee Dee Hibbler and Winsome Sinclair, who helped me learn and navigate the world of entertainment.
Being in business is not easy and challenges present themselves regularly, but I’ve learned to take my time and trust the process. By that I mean, I no longer allow what I can’t control to frustrate me. I believe the older you get the more you understand things are going to be whatever they are going to be. You learn to be OK with them.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Some of my favorite spots in the city include the Atlanta University Center because it’s like home for me -(CAU grad) and shopping in Atlantic Station. Some of my favorite things to do when time permits are attending Hot Ice Live events for live music or festivals like the Malcolm X Fest in the West End of Atlanta and to dine at Chow-Lee’s in Stone Mountain.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shout out to the women and men who work behind-the-scenes in marketing, PR, and broadcast. Rarely do most get the credit they deserve, but I want them to know they are seen and I am cheering you all on!
