We had the good fortune of connecting with Joy Winfrey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joy, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk is a necessary component for every entrepreneur. If you are building something from the ground up it could not be possible without risk. A risk that I have taken in my career is leaving college after 1 year to dedicate myself to my business. After doing so, I applied to many cosmetology schools and was accepted into my number one choice of Paul Mitchell the School Atlanta. Risk can be scary at times but it’s either for the best or the worst .. you won’t know until you try.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My entire brand stemmed from a little girl sitting in her bedroom who just big chopped her hair at home in order to grown out her newly found curl pattern. After leaving college, I immediately started to think of potential career pathways but the only one that stuck was becoming a hairstylist. When I decided that I would pursue this pathway I had mainly one thing on my mind, bringing back the authentic salon experience. In my later teenage years, more and more hairstylist were requiring clients to come to them washed and blow dried and half of them didn’t even offer trims before a protective style. I went in knowing that I did not want that experience for my future clients. This is what drove me to go to school before building clientele, to ensure I learn the ropes before I hop in the ring. It was not easy at all either. After three weeks of being in cosmetology school, I totaled my car. I lived 35 to 40 minutes away from my school and with no car and did not know how I would complete the program. Fortunately, my mother worked nearby the school so she allowed me to ride with her in the mornings and evenings. One thing that I have learned along the way is life has it’s ups and downs but it’s all about how you ride the waves. Keep a positive mindset and a connection to God or whichever higher up you believe in because if you don’t stand for anything, you’ll fall for everything.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am such a homebody but if I were to show my best friend the best time, I would first take her to the Georgia Aquarium early in the morning to beat the crowd then we would go get brunch at Toast on Lenox. Later that night I’d take her to a Hawks game at the State Farm Arena and then to Views Bar & Grill.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to my mother and father of course because without them there would be no me. I would like to shoutout God next, just for instilling the belief within me that I can do anything as long as I have Him with me. Next, shoutout to anyone who has been in my chair as a client and/or model. Thank you all for trusting me with you crowns. Lastly, I would like to shoutout my good friend Vanessa because she has been like my accountability partner since I have met her, I love you girl!
