We had the good fortune of connecting with Joshua Joel and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joshua, what inspires you?
The concept of Legacy…”what will I be remembered for”

I want my legacy to entail more than just photography, I want my character to hold weight as well.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Sometimes while on a job I find myself being more than just “The Photographer”…for example during a wedding I can wear the hat of the event coordinator, letting them know it’s time to throw the bouquet, ensuring that memory gets captured. During a prom send-off I may help attach the boutonniere to the young man’s suit. I’ve even found myself winning a few prizes at baby showers after being encouraged by the client to participate. Some may consider these acts going above and beyond or doing too much…I give my clients a “photography experience” as oppose to “photography service”

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Anything with good food, drinks and music will be a good time!

For small local bar type of vibes BlackCat Lounge or Public League are my go-to’s…kitchen, drinks, and music are always on point!

If I want to step into the heart of the city, downtown, I reach out to my guys Eazy or DHenny. These are the guys with keys to the city and their fingers on the pulse of Chicago’s nightlife.

Even though my support has been unwavering during their not so good years, now that they’re actual play-off contenders, if it’s during basketball season, definitely will make time for a Bulls Game!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Giving honor to God, who’s the head of my life…lol

I want to acknowledge some mentors of mine…”Big Bros” if you will…Terrell “T-Boy” Spraggins, set me up with my first recurring gig in Chicago’s south suburbs and opened the door to nightlife photography for me. Everett Reed taught me the overall business model and to this day continues to assist with my overall success.

There’s the greatest fraternity in the world Kappa Alpha Psi as well…I can always count on the Nupes to refer business my way and reach out for their own photography needs!

I also want to recognize The Association Chicago-Business Investment Group, which consist of my fellow CEOs and entrepreneurs across the Chicagoland area!

And of course the multitude of family, friends, and clients (existing & new) that allow me to capture the memories of their special day(s).
