Meet Joshua Cliatt | Director & Screenwriter

We had the good fortune of connecting with Joshua Cliatt and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joshua, alright, let’s jump in with a deep one – what’s you’re definition for success?
Success for me is knowing that someone or a group of people enjoy my work and that it moved them on an emotional level. In return made their life a little bit better or ignited to change something in their life for the better.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
At the moment I’m most proud of my graduate thesis short film, “Because, I Love You,” which won the Webby’s People’s Voice Award for Student Work as well as helping me be nominated for a Southeast Emmy for Best Director. Getting to that point took a lot of life experience including emotional, mental, and spiritual growth that helped me understand myself better as well as helped birthed my intentions within my artform as a filmmaker. None of the growth and lessons learned were easy. There were moments when I was homeless, couldn’t eat, was financially challenged (a lot), overlooked, and more, but I never allowed that to stop what I had set in motion, because I knew my art was bigger than me, that my art could mend deep emotional wounds, and knowing that made me persevere. I’m not a creator who shares much on their losses or even wins, however, I do want people to know if you have a dream or goal, go for it. Even if no one supports you, including yourself, someone out there is waiting on your voice, your perspective, and your mind, so don’t deny them.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m not quite the outgoing type. I’m more of your introverted cat that likes to stay home and curl up in the bed. That is my idea of a GRAND time. Hence why all of my best friends are mainly introverts as well. Sorry, not sorry.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to shoutout all the people who’ve supported me from the beginning and continue to support me as well as any new supporters. I also want to thank myself for not giving up and continuing to work towards my ambitions and goals because this shit is hard!
