We had the good fortune of connecting with Joshua Borrero and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joshua, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I’ve worked several jobs in my life, and I always saw work as something that you do because you have to, not because you enjoy it. My mind started shifting with my last job, where I started realizing my desire to pursue my creative outlets and offer it to the world. I would daydream about having the freedom to live my life differently, and with trusting in God and the support from people around me, I up and quit my job to start a business and chase the dream. I’ve known for a long time that I wanted to work for myself, but I had no idea I would start building in my mid-20s. I’m young enough to take risks and fail, and also learn ways to stay successful and get back up when I fall down. It’s a lot of work, dedication, and trusting in yourself and your abilities, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a creative that focuses on photography and videography. I believe what sets me apart is my ability to connect and relate to people in a way that helps them feel comfortable and safe. Even if someone is uncomfortable in front of the camera, my goal, besides taking good photos, is to help that person leave more confident in themselves than when they came in. I got to where I’m at today from a lot of hard work and pushing forward, but my relationships and connections have been a huge blessing as well. Challenges are all part of the journey. If you’re not being challenged, you’re not growing, and I’ve learned the most from those challenging times.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in Downtown Lawrenceville, so when people come we always have to hit Strange Taco for lunch or dinner at some point. Me and my wife go at least once a week. There’s also some other great places to eat like Local Republic for a good burger, Cosmos for pizza, Slow Pour brewery for some good beer, and a recently added Pearl’s Tea for boba tea. There’s a lot of good places around to grab a bite and drink in downtown, making it a great place to live. In Atlanta there are so many places to visit and hang at. Chrome Yellow and East Pole are two of my favorite coffee shops to not only get a coffee, but also to hang out at. I’ve taken several friends to those places and my wife loves them as well. For breakfast, I really like Emerald City Bagels and Flying Biscuit Cafe. I don’t go out to eat for breakfast much, but those are go to places 100%. I am a big fan of ramen, and nothing beats Jinya. My cousin Daniel constantly told me about it and I understand why, it’s always so good and their vibe is on point. If I’m looking for a killer sandwich, then Cheba Hut is THE spot. The sandwich selection and flavor always hits the spot. To end the night, Monday Night Garage is a huge brewery in the Westend that holds a lot of events and has one of the friendliest atmospheres. My personal favorite bar is Joystick Gamebar in Edgewood. Drinks are great, and they have tons of retro arcade games and host all types of events, with my favorite being Super Smash Bros on Sunday nights. It’s a good balance of people who want to compete and people who don’t play often. The bartenders there are awesome, and I’ve never had a bad time there. There’s so much to do in Atlanta and other surrounding cities, but there are some places I would take anyone to for some good food and hangs.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The person who is want to dedicate my Shoutout to is my wife, Rachel. There was never a moment where she hasn’t supported me and cheered me on. She started a full time job and gave me complete permission to quit my job and pursue building a business, because she believed in me. There were times where I was depressed and unmotivated, and she continued to push for me to get up and keep pushing. She always says she’s proud of me, and wants to see how my work is progressing. It’s moments like that, that remind me why I did this in the first place, and why I will not stop pushing myself to grow and flourish. Thank you Rachel, for everything.
