We had the good fortune of connecting with Josh Schorle and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Josh, why did you pursue a creative career?
I love using my hands and the tools at my disposal to take the crazy ideas in my head and turn them into reality. Sometimes I have a hard time expressing into words what I’m thinking or what the image is that I’m seeing in my head, being able to turn a concept into a reality that can then be seen, shared, & understood by more than just me is so fun. I love capturing an image or a video and being able to use it to communicate something much deeper than what we see on the surface or be able to share a different perspective on the mundane day to day sights, both big and small, that otherwise go unnoticed.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My favorite thing to do is product photography. I obsess over the details and showcasing all the little things that make that product great. It could be a certain texture on the surface of an item, it could be a special engraving, it could be showing the moment someone is interacting with it…. I want people to look at a photo and feel everything that’s happening in a photo just by looking at it. I also love taking something about that item and creating a whole story / environment around it. For example, I own a couple items that have a very specific raven logo on them. A raven is a kind of bird, birds are often in cages, so I’ll look for something that could represent the cage and take a photo of that item in that kind of environment. Same concept goes for a series of small challenge coins I own that contain the words “The best things in life aren’t things.” So I took individual photos of these coins positioned in different spots mid air and, in photoshop, made it look like I was dropping this set of coins into a small fire beneath my loosened fist. The point is to let the subject of the photo shine.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I don’t know if I could go as far as create an itinerary, but I would hit as many key places as possible. Being based in Dubuque, IA, I would have to stop by the Riverwalk along the Mississippi River. Love looking at all the artwork displayed. Taking a ride up the Fenelon Place Elevator is a must, at least once. Getting to the top and looking out at the horizon. Love it. Love seeing the grander picture in life and being able to see the expanse of everything. Going down to the Mines of Spain (Horseshoe Bluff) is also a must. Go for a casual hike or veer off into many of the small offshoot trails and go for a long adventure. Either way, you’re gonna have a great time. Additionally, you have to stop by the Farmer’s Market on Saturday morning in the Summer months. Get some fresh produce, get some breakfast, or a perfect mid-morning snack with some coffee.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I recognize this is a little cheesy but I seriously don’t think I’d be where I’m at now if it weren’t for my friends. They put up with all my crazy ideas and are willing to lend a helping hand when my ideas need more than just me in order to properly execute my vision. They’re also the same ones cheering me on and encouraging me when I get down on myself.
