We had the good fortune of connecting with Josh Atwood and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Josh, what matters most to you?
I think accurately setting expectations and being able to reliably deliver on your sales process promises is huge. Of course we always hone our craft as we go but I look at a lot of people in this business and it seems like they jump in trying to cash in on a market without being really ready and end up taking some pretty big risks when it comes to dealing with peoples material property and investments. I think services are in many ways very commoditized and if you aren’t setting yourself apart through your core values, you’re going to tank yourself before you know it. I strive to be as upfront, honest, and direct with my clients and educate them about the industry and the process so they understand up front exactly what they’re buying when they choose me and my services. It sounds cliche but you can’t go wrong if you underpromise and over-deliver.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Auto detailing really has a lot of variations among providers as far as services offered and quality levels of work. The hardest part of the journey has really been building a brand and reputation in a relatively crowded industry. The low barrier to entry means there’s always a lot of players in this game at any given time. In just 3 years of business I’ve seen a lot of names come and go. It’s extremely competitive and the nature of the business is such that everyone is selling a very different value proposition in their offerings. Everything from the cheap and quick wash guys up to the every nook and cranny restoration detailers that spend 3 days on a vehicle. I’ve successfully positioned myself to cater to a specific niche and specialized my business by offering services that take a little more skill and specialized equipment so that’s allowed me to carve out a slightly more comfortable space and really focus on one specific market segment which really helps me focus my marketing budget and efforts. I’ve really learned that you don’t want to try to compete with everyone and end up spreading yourself too thin or compromising your offering to meet a lower tier and my need to be great at what I’m doing before I sell it keeps me from biting off more than I can chew in the higher end markets. It’s great though because I learn new things almost quarterly and that really let’s me carve out my own path into the next growth opportunity.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’ve been all over the US and visited some really great places but I think I’ll always call the Atlanta area my home. It’s just right up my alley as far as music, arts, culture, vibe, and diversity of people. When friends and family visit of course I have my go-to touristy options but I really try to tune into the person and understand their vibe and try to show them a taste of the city that satiates that. I think these days we’ve moved past people thinking of Atlanta as just another Georgia town and really solidified an identity as an oasis among stereotypical southern drivel.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Biggest shoutouts to my mom and my girlfriend. They have both really supported and stood by me in everything I’ve done in both personal and business. They’ve really believed in me even when I didn’t believe in myself and it’s really nice to feel supported when things get tough. I’ve had a really hard last few years and I don’t know where I’d be without them. Also huge shoutout to all of the friends who have supported me as clients or referred me to others. It’s one thing to say good job or attaboy, but it’s another when someone puts their own stamp of approval on you in trusting their vehicle or putting their personal reputation on the line by recommending you. Again, a lot of great friends and family who just believe in me and what I stand for and are willing to put their name on a recommendation is huge and encouraging and I’m endlessly thankful for that.
