We had the good fortune of connecting with Jordan Norswearthy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jordan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The thought process was just focused on verification. I always knew I had the talent to do what I do, so I just needed a business to have people not see me as unprofessional. I just believe if you have a talent, you might as well profit off of it. I did the same work before my “business” was a business.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Back in 2012, I was really obsessed with Youtube gaming channels. Mainly because I was eleven years old and couldn’t afford anything, but also because I was too young to get a hold of the games that I wanted. I also had a pretty poor-performing laptop, so I tried to pirate every single game I could. Granted, that caused my computer to be extremely slow and possibly have a virus, I think it paid off. I started off doing gameplays on games such as “Happy Wheels” and was just testing the waters to see how to record gameplay footage.
After figuring everything out, I decided to make my youtube channel a few months later. I started off uploading gameplays from the currently popular game “Roblox” (yes, I was on the Roblox wave before it was cool), until I got tired of that and decided to switch it up a notch. After saving up money, I figured it was a good idea to switch over to recording Call Of Duty gameplay on my Nintendo Wii.
I somewhat built something of a fanbase concerning the Wii community, but it was nothing special. While doing those videos, I got introduced to vlogging. I would set up the camera and just talk nonsense about upcoming events for the channel, what I have planned next, etc (even though all of it was a lie).
Time passed, and with each video or youtube thumbnail, I learned more and more techniques. 2018 came, and I’m coming up on my final semester of being in high school. Towards the end of the fall semester, I thought “What if I vlogged all of my high school moments up until graduation?” In which I decided to do so. My last few months as a senior was vlogged, and every event was posted onto Youtube. Half of the school knew about me personally, but majority of the school loved the content that was being posted. I even had teachers asking about my next upload date.
We’re now in 2019, and I’m starting to get eyes at me. My friend’s younger brother “FSG Scar” asked me to shoot a video for him. With me not having a business (nor a camera), I was very nervous and unsure about it. We shot it, and it came out with hella potential, we just needed to be stronger. We shot more and more videos through the rest of the year, until college started. Upon my graduation, I figured it would be cool to also vlog my college life. August 2019 came, and I dropped my most important vlog yet, my first college vlog. Being in the new city of Huntsville gave me so many eye-opening moments that the camera couldn’t even show to everyone. It wasn’t until 2020, when the “you-know-what” happened.
Being back at home was extremely depressing. The lack of content was showing, and I was lasting my channel off of old vlogs pre-pandemic. However, I ended up buying my very first camera. Immediately after that, I ran into two girls by the name of Jordan and Zoey. Crazy enough, we all had an idea in mind during the pandemic, but didn’t have the correct resources. We all came together and shot our first short film, “We Are FULL OF POWER”. Now, I’m getting into the feel of how things flow during a shoot. I also had a pet-peeve with adding my government name to every single project, it felt weird to me. Once that was addressed, I created my first business, “FILMEDBYJN”.
Through the following couple of years, I built clientele, and began to spread my content around Alabama. Now, i’m getting ready for my last semester in college. After the loss of my grandmother, I’m even more motivated to live the life I want, and have the business I want. I now also do majority if the media for Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University’s athletics department, as well as social media content for the Cricket Wireless “SWAC Vs. MEAC Celebration Bowl”.
I want everyone to know that this stuff takes experience and journeys. Nothing will come easy if you feel entitled to it. I went under so many problems through these journeys, and I still am! It’s not about how bad the situation is, it’s how bad you want to get out of the situation. What sets me apart from others is my work resume. For me being 21 years old, I’ve created over 300+ videos, countless pictures, flyers, etc. This is a head start that not too many people have, and it’s constantly improving.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Week long trip? Got you. Monday, you keep things slow and probably send them out to the downtown area of huntsville. Tuesday, take them to Big Spring Park, and Wednesday probably somewhere like the museum. Gotta keep stuff simple and boring for the first few days. Thursday, we’re hitting the Blevins Gap cliff and Bridge Street to shop. Friday, we’re definitely going to whatever kickback or party is going on, cause there are plenty of them in Huntsville. Saturday, kick the morning off with Superhero Chef, then maybe Insanity Complex (it’s hella stuff there but underrated). And Sunday we’re ending everything off with either the Blac Cigar Lounge, or the Roller Time skating rink on adult night. In between the days, there are stuff like Scottsboro’s three-story thrift market, axe throwing, and the escape room. It’s plenty of other places I missed but these are the basic spots.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to dedicate this interview to my late grandmother Carolyn, my family, “The Money Team”, the athletic director of Alabama A&M University and FSG Scar aka “Scar”.
