We had the good fortune of connecting with Jonathan Powell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jonathan, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
I think my business has taught me the importance studying the market. When I came into the business, I was young and had more of a focus on the artistic and technical side than the business per say, I am in a space now where I focus and study business! I look at the market, price points, customer service and more. I think a degree of business knowledge is good to have when entering into a new business.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I believe that I am where I am on God-purpose. I am definitely not where I want to be but I am not where I used to be haha. I have put in countless hours and time into my craft. I have studied professionals, taken classes, gone to hair shows, bought DVD’s (when it was out lol), bought books, shadowed people and more. There is no doubt that I have not mirrored what I have gleaned from. When I first started in the industry, I made it a quest to become a cut/color expert in my field but now I have narrowed it down to just cutting and I think that is what I’m probably most proud of. The fact that I am always able to give myself grace or make allowance to make adjustments and revisions. It has not been easy to do these things also because there is always this voice of “you’re not getting anywhere.” I have always faced this inner voice with myself in not thinking that I had what it took to chase my dream of becoming a world renown industry leader just because of the intense opposition of what I would always face externally and within myself. It has taken time and courage to continue to encourage myself to “keep going.” I’ve learned also that our time is not God’s time. As a man of faith, I like to pride myself and abase all of my belief and being from God’s word. His Word says in the book of Amos that the vison is for an “appointed time.” Every day, I keep myself rooted in that truth. That is what the JP brand represents; resilience, perseverance and the ever going fire/passion to keep going. I want my story to be a testament to others that they can reach their dreams also and that they CAN be…somebody. It may cost you something to get there, but the reward will not be able to compare once it is achieved.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well, Atlanta is a great city. If my best friend was visiting, I would definitely have to check out a list of places that I have been recommended to go to (restaurant wise). I don’t even think he would care all that much because of his simplicity of foods and seeing that he is a wing spot guy haha. As far as recreational activities, I cannot mention a lot about that either. I am a pretty chill guy and don’t have to have a whole lot of extravagant places to go to.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Yes. I have been blessed to come across many people, individuals and companies that have helped me get to where I am today. The people I’d definitely want to acknowledge though is Brandon Bufford, Patric Bradley, Toni & Guy, and much more. These companies and individuals have helped me in not only my skill set and professional life but personal and spiritual development also.
