We had the good fortune of connecting with Jonathan Beres and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jonathan, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
Within the fine fragrance industry, not all fancy, high-end fragrances are made from high end materials. Many luxury fragrance companies use cheap paraffin wax, toxic chemical fragrances, and unnecessary, and potentially harmful additives. It’s important to do your research into what your buying because it could cost you your health. I’m not going to call out or bash any companies on here, but it is shocking the large name brands you will find using sub-par materials and selling it to you for extremely high markups. Make sure you are getting what you pay for.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The Sabal Collection is a unique company taking fine fragrance to the next level. Our fragrances don’t just look and smell good, they are made with top-quality materials. Our candles are made from food-grade coconut wax, a renewable material which helps the candles last longer, burn better and is healthier for our customers than paraffin wax. We also use non-toxic fragrance oils so you know that amazing aroma your enjoying is healthy for you. All of our candles are vegan, non-toxic and made from coconut wax.
The Sabal Collection started on accident. At the start of the pandemic, I was working at the airport. With travel coming to a halt, I was laid off. With so much time on my hands, I decide to start playing around with making candles. After months of research, I developed my own formula for a clean, vegan, non-toxic, coconut wax candle. My family and friends wanted more candles to use and suggested I make it into my own business. With the launch of our first collection, we sold out within hours.
Owning a business is not easy. At the moment, i’m also a student and working in corporate america. To have a successful business, it takes drive, tenacity, dedication, and effort. It’s not for the lazy. I spend countless late nights working on my business and I use my weekends to meet with my clients. With all of this time I devote to my business, I still try to make time for myself and my family.
In business, there are going to be countless challenges. It’s important to not let those challenges get in the way of your visions and continue to push toward your goals. I’ve experienced financial strain, issues getting materials during the pandemic, and delays in receiving product. When these challenges happen, you have to stop, take a moment to think and identify what is important to accomplish, come up with an alternative plan and continue to push on.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Atlanta is a great city to visit. When showing people around, I love taking them to the Aquarium right when they open. It’s less busy then and i’ve noticed the fish are more active then. It’s a great, magical aquarium filled with fish from all over the world. It’s mesmerizing to watch them. Then, I love to go to the Dwarf House in Hapeville. The first chick-fil-a is a great trip back in time and allows you to try some discontinued menu items including a burger (it’s quite amazing and I recommend it to anyone. How many people can say they had a burger at Chick-fil-a!). After lunch, aviation lovers would love the Delta Museum. It shows the unique and quite interesting history of one of the United States’ largest airlines. Plus, it’s pretty cool to get up close and personal with some of these large aircrafts. If you enjoy plane spotting, its right next to the airport and a great spot. The surplus sales are awesome to go to allowing aviation lovers to find unique gifts and keepsakes. I love to shop so I love driving up to Alpharetta to the Avalon. Being outside walking the beautiful streets shopping is the best way to end the day. Stop in to some of the great restaurants there for a bite to eat. After, stop at Jenni’s ice cream for a sweet treat. If you want the night to continue, stop by one of the many luxury bars the city has to offer. Many of the hotels have great ones. The Waldorf Astoria in buckhead has a nice little bar perfect to end the night in.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My friends and family have been an amazing support group. It’s not easy trying to run a business and having a solid support system is key to a successful business. My support group has spent countless hours providing me advice, helping with production, attending events, and running errands for me. They are the reason my company is where it is today.
