We had the good fortune of connecting with Johnny Nomad and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Johnny, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I don’t believe in work life balance, when people use that term they tend to think of 50/50. I like the word harmony, so I try to find harmony between my work and my family. sometimes the family may take 80% of my time and sometimes work may take 70% of my time. Everyday its going to be different and I have to adjust. Being a creative I schedule my creative time, as well as my movie night with the kids, or my dinner date with my wife. As I’ve grown my mindset has changed about life and how I want to spend it with the people I love most and the people that interest me the most as well. So I removed the word balance from my life and now I live in harmony.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a writer, I have been a writer since I was 13 when I wrote my first poem. But for 18 years I put away my writing, I even threw away my poetry books. I was young with a family so, I had to man up and go to work. I focused on my career and did pretty well. But this writing thing kept on tugging at me. For 18 years I ignored this primal hunger to write and focus on my craft. I judged myself too much and I doubted my talent that I was born with.

I told myself that I wouldn’t be able to take care of my family if I just focused on writing. That was the wrong thing to do. The challenge was my mindset and it was not easy to over come after years of self doubt. I learned that I had to believe in me, the fear and doubt I began to use it as energy/motivation to fuel my writing. I stopped comparing myself to other writers and only focused on what I was doing and how I can get better at my craft. So I picked up the pen in 2018 and published my first book called “Purpose” it was a book based off my Instagram where I put up visual and motivational commentary. I self published this book on Amazon and learnt a lot bout indie publishing, market awareness,

Fast forward today I am currently completing my first poetry book called “My life” where I have written poems on my Brooklyn experience growing up in a tough neighborhood. I am also including my abstract art work as part of the book as well. So a few selections will be placed in the book with the poems.

I am currently 43 years old and I am finally living my best creative life. I have chosen to write and practice my craft everyday. I have created a schedule that includes my writing and now I challenge myself more by using writing prompts to push my creativity to another level.

Never doubt who you are or the gift you was born with, never give up for anything or anyone. Family and friends will never understand you so get use to it, find your creative family so you can grow with your community. The more creative people you surround yourself with you will 10x your skill, remember steal sharpens steal.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Atlanta has some cool places so I would take my friends/family to the Belt line, have a nice long walk and end up at Ponce City Market. There is some great food spots in there my favorite is the Puerto Rican restaurant they have a really good Mofongo, Then we will go to the Battery and chill there and get some drinks. From there I would take them to the Human rights museum and have them experience the replica of the dinner counter from back when there was segregation its a chilling experience.

And if it’s a hot summer day, we are going to Six flags over Georgia so we can get wet and ride some roller coasters.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shoutout my wife Lovely Lopez, she is an amazing woman who gives so much of her self to our family. She puts us first over herself and always is willing to help others with her kindness. She is a type of person that will take on your pain as if it was her’s. She has our family ready for our day to day everyday. She never fails us. She has given me space, time and her support to be the creative that I am. At times it can be tough to be married to a creative but she has been my biggest cheer leader for years. So I shoutout Lovely Lopez, I love you and thank you baby for everything you have done and continue to do for our family.
