We had the good fortune of connecting with Johane Filemon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Johane, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I always knew I wanted to have authority over my own time. When I first started out in my field, I got to experience what is was like working in a clinical setting and working for an entity. I found that not only was I not able to have more flexibility in my time to be able to be more present in activities that my children were a part of, but I did not find that I was as impactful in the health of the patients I was working with. There was only so much that I could actually due because of budgeting and laws regarding interventions. I knew that I needed to start my own practice to make more of a difference in the lives of the patients/clients that I worked with and in the lives of my children as they are growing up.

What should our readers know about your business?
My practice is Wonderfully Nutritious Solutions, LLC, based out of Atlanta Georgia. In my practice I focus on helping my clients reverse chronic inflammation due to digestive deficiencies. I practice with a “not one size fits all” mentality because everyone is different and I don’t think handing out the same therapies to people without finding out the true cause of their issues work. What got me to focus on this is the experience I had years ago when I got sick and it was hard for my health team to figure out what was wrong with me. Some practitioners handed me standard recommendations because they could not figure out what was going on. It was with research on my end, along the help with the help of some of my health team, and being my very own 1st patient with the therapies that I design, that I got the healing I needed. I knew that as much as I was able, I could not let others go through and live with pain forever. It has not been easy at all to get to where I am at with my business today. It was hard to quit a stable job with stable income to go out on my own. I am a minority in my field, as black dietitians make up ~2.6% of dietitian overall. This made it hard for me to find mentors that I was comfortable with to provide guidance. What I’ve learned over the years is to only have people around you who will support your endeavors and cheer you on. I already had a lot of doubt and having people around me who were also verbalizing doubt I could not have. I have also learned that I am strong, and resilient and I love what I do. I will give it my all to help my clients reach their goals and reverse their symptoms so that they do not have to live a life full of physical pain.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Ha! This is a good one. Although I am an introvert that loves being at home, prior to the pandemic, I loved activities that actually required me to be active. Georgia has some of the best trails and mountains to climb. We would climb a couple of the mountains especially the ones with waterfalls. We would most likely eat at some of my favorite food spots like Negril Village or The Spice House. Island food are some of my favorite culinary dishes. I would also schedule us completing an obstacle course cause we are competitive people. At the end of the week, a dinner party would be scheduled at my house with all of our friends that are in town because I’m a pretty good cook and love throwing it down in the kitchen for the people I love.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family! My parents, godmother and husband have been so supportive and my number 1 fans! My parents not only brought me to the United States from Haiti to find a better life, but they made many sacrifices throughout the years for me to be successful. My husband took over a lot of the “shoulder to cry on and ear to listen” once we got together and he always has this unwavering support of me, no matter my goals. My godmother has been a part of my life from the day I was born and has always supported me. I love them all dearly and could not be where I am at today without them.
