We had the good fortune of connecting with Jodi Gremminger and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jodi, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
You simply cannot pursue a career in this industry without taking risks. Many people often don’t pursue their dreams because of the risk that they have to take to get them there. Personally, I would rather take that risk then spend the rest of my life wondering what could’ve been.

Taking risks has played a huge part in my acting career. Before I knew that I was going to pursue a career in the entertainment industry, I dropped out of college and spent my savings on classes. That was the first real big risk I had taken and it was terrifying . I was unsure if that was the right decision at that time.

If I never took that risk, I might have never left my small hometown in Missouri behind.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When it comes to my career, there are so many things I have to be proud of. I have confidence in knowing that this is exactly what I am meant to do and there is not anyone or anything that could change my mind or take that away from me.

I believe what sets me apart from others is my ambition. The drive I have for my career is something that will never go away. I spent years trying to go down a different career path due to the lack of support around me. it felt impossible to believe in myself when almost everyone around me didn’t. Eventually, I couldn’t get rid of this gut feeling that I had for so long. I told myself to either take action or forget about it forever. I knew that there was a reason I couldn’t let this go.

One of the hardest things I ever had to do was leave my life behind in Missouri. I know lots of artist left their hometown to pursue their dreams but I went to a school that was so small they didn’t have drama class or theater. I was never exposed to the arts. Which made me feel like I was against all odds because I had no background in acting whatsoever. I fully believe I am only where I am at now professionally because I finally made the jump to move. From living with my parents to moving to a city by myself, that I have never been to, is the reason I am able to overcome so many challenges.

I have always been excited for the world to hear my story for many reasons. I never felt like I wasn’t good at anything growing up. I struggled a lot in school and hated reading in general. I got in trouble for talking all the time and could never stay focused. Later on I was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder and all my struggles with school seemed to make a little more sense to me. I started asking myself “Jodi, you hate reading and have a hard time studying…. how do you expect to be an actress?”. At this point in time I was living in Atlanta and felt stuck. I was completely convinced my ADD would get in the way of my success. I knew this was something I needed to get past to have a acting career. Eventually, I booked my first role in a Indie film. Unfortunately, I was psyching myself out. I remember being on the phone with my dad, crying, telling him “I can’t do this, it feels impossible… why would I think I could memorize a whole script?”. He told me ” jojo, you are smarter than you believe and you are going to do this because you have to. You have come a long way and I know you don’t want to give up “. I kept pushing myself and eventually memorized the script. Though this may not seem like a big deal to others, this is a challenge I have had trouble with my entire life. Reading and remembering what I read. Overcoming a challenge that I have struggled with for so long, made me feel like I could overcome anything in this industry. I am so excited to share my story because I want to encourage men and women, who have the same struggles I do, to know that they can do whatever they set their minds to. To not let a disorder make them feel like they cant accomplish goals.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One of the first places that come to mind when showing my best friend around Atlanta is Ponce City Market. There are so many restaurants and shops to go to. Her and I both love trying new things at places we have never been to before. It would be hard to pick one place to eat or drink considering we are both the type of people to hop from place to place.

Next we would go to Piedmont Park and walk the beltline. Then to kill some time before we go out in the evening we would lay out by the pool. Later on we would either go out to the Battery or bar hop in Buckhead with some old co-workers of mine at Red Door Tavern. When you are from a small town like we are, you don’t have many options to chose from. That is why when my friends visit, anything is and everything is exciting and fun to do!

Personally, there are so many things to do in Atlanta and that is why I love this city so much!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The one person who comes to mind from the very beginning is my Maw Maw (Grandma). For as long as I can remember, I had this gut feeling that I wanted to perform. When I first mentioned an interest in the entertainment industry to my friends and family, I had little to no support. Everyone except my Maw Maw were giving me a list of reasons as to why it would never work out in the end. When I think back on the beginning of my journey in this career, all I picture is that one conversation I had with my Maw Maw that gave me the push to follow my dreams.
