We had the good fortune of connecting with Jiayi Chen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jiayi, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
From a young age, I found myself captivated by the intricate world of automotive design, marveling at the sleek lines and innovative concepts shaping each vehicle. This passion for cars ignited a curiosity within me that only grew stronger over time. As I delved deeper into my undergraduate studies, I discovered a new fascination with digital interfaces and their potential to revolutionize the way we interact with technology.

While my academic journey provided me with a solid foundation in UI/UX design theory and digital media, I remain humbly aware of the vast complexities within this field. Each day presents an opportunity for me to expand my knowledge and refine my skills, and I approach this journey with an open mind and a willingness to learn.

The prospect of merging my artistic sensibilities with the technical demands of automotive UI/UX design is both exciting and daunting. Yet, it’s a challenge I embrace wholeheartedly, driven by a deep-seated passion to make a meaningful impact in the realm of mobility.

As I look towards the future, my ultimate aspiration is to play a pivotal role in shaping the user experience of tomorrow’s intelligent mobility. I envision a world where artistry, practicality, and safety converge seamlessly within the confines of vehicle interiors, providing users with an experience that is not only innovative but also imbued with confidence and trust. With this vision driving my endeavors, I am eager to embark on the journey ahead, exploring new horizons and pushing the boundaries of possibility in the realm of automotive UI/UX design.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My career journey began at a German-based design firm specializing in automotive user experience. We collaborated extensively with renowned American automotive companies on various projects, including digital dashboards, In-Vehicle Infotainment Systems, Augmented Reality Heads-Up Displays, and more. These experiences afforded me the opportunity to work closely with some of my favorite cars, engaging in design, testing, and witnessing the production process firsthand. Unfortunately, I experienced the wave of layoffs that hit our entire Detroit studio in the latter half of last year.

As an international student, I faced a narrow 90-day window to secure a new position. I’ve heard stories of greater challenges, reminding me that the journey in this field is rarely smooth sailing. It’s my passion for the industry that has kept me moving forward.

Now, I’m fortunate to be involved in user experience design for the next generation of automotive multimedia systems at Toyota North America. I hope more people can appreciate the dedication of designers in crafting seamless user experiences. Through my work, I aim to contribute to enhancing the interaction between users and their vehicles, making driving journeys both practical and enjoyable.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Having spent over three years at the Savannah College of Art and Design, I’ve grown accustomed to both Atlanta and Savannah, considering them more as my own backyard than tourist destinations. While both cities offer numerous attractions, I find solace and enjoyment in the natural beauty of Atlanta’s Stone Mountain and Savannah’s Wormsloe State Historic Site. Perhaps I have a penchant for wooded areas and the tranquility they offer amidst bustling city life.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Absolutely, I would like to dedicate my shoutout to Don Norman. To be frank, he played a significant role in guiding me towards my passion for design. I am drawn to designs that are both rational and emotional. While some may prefer boundless creativity and freehand drawing, I find myself gravitating towards theory and testing to uncover the solutions I seek. However, in creating exceptional products, it’s not just about seamless user experiences; there also needs to be a Wow Factor. Norman’s insights, particularly in his book “The Design of Everyday Things,” have been incredibly inspiring for me. His interpretation of emotional design resonates deeply with me. His products consistently strike a balance between meeting user needs and evoking an emotional connection, which constantly reminds me of the importance of emotion and sentiment in design. It also instills in me the awareness to never overlook those subtle emotional nuances during user usability testing. Don Norman’s influence has truly left an indelible mark on my approach to design.
