We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Swank and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Creating art is all I have ever wanted to do. I tried a different career path and it didn’t work for me, because it wasn’t making art. So I decided to put all of my energy into what I did want, and learn to make it feasible. My amazing community and support system have made this possible.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I changed career paths and went back to school to become the artist I am now. That’s definitely not the only path to being an artist, but it was mine. I attended grad school during the Covid-19 pandemic as well, which completely changed the trajectory of my work.
My work centers around the relationship between technology and humans. This shows up in various ways, but I’m really interested in the dichotomous relationship we have with it. I primarily work in photography and sculpture, and they actually work together seamlessly. Most of my photos are constructed imagery, so they are actually photographs of my sculptural works.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d love to shoutout my family, especially my husband Matt. My art collective, Zero Space Collective, is also a crucial support system for my work and endeavors. Go check out our website at www.zerospacecollective.com and see the other artists in the collective, because they all do amazing work!
