We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jessica, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I am originally from Memphis, TN, but I now live in Los Angeles, CA. My parents taught me to treat people well and to help others in need. I’ve always had a heart of wanting to give back to others so that definitely plays a role in who I am today. I really like to volunteer with various organizations such as Second Harvest Food bank because I believe they really make a difference in the communities they serve. My dad had health issues most of his life ranging from high blood pressure to diabetes. After witnessing him having a stroke, which was both traumatizing and a push for me, I decided to go into the public health field. I initially wanted to become a doctor, but after my dad passed away in 2010, I decided I would rather be on the prevention side of health and encourage others to take care of themselves before they end up in the hospital or with a health condition that is totally preventable. I love to create workout videos and share them with my followers as to encourage them to get up and move their body because our bodies were made to move! Aside from health, I am a creative. I’ve been interested in fashion since I was a child. I now have my own business where I design t-shirts, duffle bags, tote bags, and many other items. I feel that this allows me to express my creativity in a major way.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The first piece of art I ever designed was of Nipsey Hustle using words from his songs. I really loved that piece and it made me want to create more art. The thing that sets me apart from other is that I love to use lots of color and I’m not afraid to be in my own lane. I know my art has a different look to it and I’m okay with that. When I initially started creating art I thought my work had to look like that of others to be accepted and I would get discouraged when I didn’t get the feedback I was expecting. However, I’ve learned that’s not the case. We all have our own audience, so what may intrigue one person will not intrigue the next. I think that’s the beauty in being a creative. You can showcase your ideas to the world and there will always be someone who loves it. This is why it’s so important to be oneself. My brand aims to encourage other creatives like myself that art can be in any form and it’s okay to express that in whatever way we see fit.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting the area, the first place I would take them is to the marina. I think they would love it because they’ll be able to experience the cool breeze of the ocean and enjoy some amazing food while we’re there! I would then take them hiking in the Hollywood Hills. The views are simply amazing. We would then check out some of the art museums in LA, where not only would they be able to experience a wonderful art experience, they would take in beautiful views as well. We would then do a little beach hopping, because there are endless beaches here in Southern California. I would also take them on the ferry to experience one of the many islands LA has to offer where you can whale watch and also catch a glimpse of dolphins as well.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would definitely love to shout out my dad, James Jones Jr. A lot of people equate success to materialistic things, but it is so much more. My dad was the epitome of what success looked like. He was not a millionaire and he didn’t own a yacht, but he raised ten children with my mother and demonstrated what hard work looked like. He taught me to never give up and not make excuses. If I was to have anything I couldn’t depend on anyone else to go get it for me and my dad taught me not to sit around and feel sorry for myself, especially when things were tough. I truly appreciate him for that.
